Donning cowboy hats and cowboy boots, the City's Downtown Operations Department and the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo today announced plans for the annual Western Heritage Parade. The free event is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 in downtown San Antonio.

1/19: City of San Antonio Launches Newly Designed Website

The City has launched the first phase of its newly redesigned website, www.sanantonio.gov, which is more user-friendly and easier to navigate.

1/17: More than 150,000 marchers in San Antonio honor legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. in one of nation's largest events

San Antonio, home to one of the nation's largest marches commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr., once again showcased a remarkable turnout of participants for an annual event that began in 1978 with 50 individuals and that this year attracted more than 150,000 people.

12/20: City seeks applicants for new Building-Relate and Fire Codes Appeals and Advisory Board

The Building-Related and Fire Codes Appeals and Advisory Board is seeking applicants to fill 34 positions on this newly-created board to hear and decide appeals of orders, decision or determinations made by the Building Official or the Fire Chief relative to the City Code.

12/16: Applications sought for City Council District 3

The City of San Antonio is seeking applicants to fill an unexpired Council Term for City Council District 3. Completed applications with supporting documentation and financial disclosure statements will be accepted until Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 at 5 p.m. in the Office of the City Clerk.

12/12: Mayor Castro formally unveils City's electric vehicle chargers available for public use

San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro today officially unveiled the City's new electric vehicle chargers available to the public. A total of eight electric vehicle chargers are located throughout the city, with five of them stationed in City-owned parking garages downtown.

12/9: Nominations for the 2012 Martin Luther King, Jr. awards being accepted

Time still remains for nominations to be submitted by Bexar County residents for the 2012 Baha'i Unity of Humanity Award and the Rev. Dr. R.A. Callies, Sr. Courage Award - a new award named in honor of the late founder of the San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. March.

12/9: 2012 MLK Scholarship application now available

The 2012 Martin Luther King, Jr., Scholarship application is now available. Graduating high school seniors planning to pursue a college degree and who are seeking financial assistance are encouraged to apply.

12/2: Market Square celebrates 25th annual Blessing of the Animals

In honor of the animals present at the first nativity, all animals, including dogs, cats, horses, llamas, donkeys, snakes, parrots and other furry, feathered or even scaly pets, are invited to be presented at the 25th annual Blessing of the Animals on Saturday, Dec. 10 from noon to 6 p.m. at downtown's historic Market Square. The event is free and open to the public.

12/2: Los Pastores make their way to Market Square

The City's Downtown Operations Department will bring the joy of the holidays and the annual tradition of La Pastorela to Market Square, located at 514 W. Commerce. The event is free and is scheduled from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011.

11/30: Holiday Market in the park starts this Friday

Need some Holiday cheer during your lunch hour? On Friday, Dec. 2, brown bag your lunch and come to Travis Park, located at 301 E. Travis, to enjoy live seasonal musical entertainment and do some Holiday shopping. The Holiday Market at Travis Park is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday Dec. 2, Dec. 9 and Dec. 16.

11/23: La Villita to host annual Tamalada Workshop

La Villita's annual workshop, La Gran Tamalada, is scheduled from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 26 in Historic La Villita, Maverick Plaza. In addition to a hands-on tamal demonstration, the free event features musical entertainment, traditional food and drink including bunelos tamales, aguas frescas and more.

11/23: La Feria de Santa Cecilia celebrates patroness of music

On Saturday, November 26 from noon to 7 p.m. and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 27, local bands and Mariachi groups will gather and celebrate La Feria de Santa Cecilia: El Dia del Musico, or Festival of St. Cecilia: Day of the Musician, at Historic Market Square in downtown San Antonio. The event is free and open to the public.

11/23: A new way to experience holiday lights downtown

The Office of Historic Preservation announces the next Go! Historic SA Guided Running & Walking Tour on Thursday, December 8, at 6 p.m. featuring the new energy-efficient and festive holiday lighting downtown.

11/22: Community input requested on creation of design guidelines for historic districts and landmarks

The Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) will kick-off a process to create citywide historic district design guidelines with the consultant team of Clarion Associates and Hardy Heck Moore. The consultant team and OHP, with extensive public input, will produce detailed guidelines that will direct the appropriate long-term development of San Antonio's historic resources.

11/18: SWMD Thanksgiving holiday collection schedule

In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, there will be no recycling, garbage or organics recycling collection on Thursday, November 24.
Residents who normally receive collection on Thursday will receive service on Wednesday, November 23. Residents who receive Friday collection will receive their regularly scheduled service on Friday, November 25.

11/18: Energy efficient LED lighting illuminates San Antonio's River Walk this Holiday Season

The River Walk, a San Antonio treasure and one of Texas' top attractions, will be aglow this holiday season with more than 1.76 million multi-colored light-emitting diode (LED) lights wrapping the trees and lining the street bridges along its banks. The new energy efficient lighting not only enhances the experience to all who visit the River Walk, but it also adds 20 times more lights, utilizes less than half the energy of traditional incandescent lighting and supports long-term sustainability efforts.

11/18: Mayor Castro unveils plans to select City's first Official Poet Laureate

Mayor Julián Castro announced today the City's plans to select San Antonio's first Official Poet Laureate. In doing so, San Antonio will become the first major Texas city to currently appoint a Poet Laureate.

11/18: Municipal Golf Association-SA seeks applicants for its Board of Directors

The Municipal Golf Association-SA (MGA-SA) is seeking applicants to fill a City of San Antonio appointed position on its 15-member Board of Directors.

11/16: City's election history preserved via digitization

City Clerk Leticia M. Vacek is unveiling the City of San Antonio Election Results from as far back as 1856 to the Present within the Municipal Archives and Records Digital Collection.

11/10: City, students repair homes in Tobin Hill Historic District

More than 100 architecture students from the University of Texas at San Antonio and San Antonio College will make repairs to six homes in the Tobin Hill Historic District. The City's Office of Historic Preservation, along with the UTSA College of Architecture and volunteer contractors and building professionals, are coordinating this service project known as S.T.A.R. (Students Together Achieving Revitalization). This is the first time that S.T.A.R. will be in Tobin Hill.

The City of San Antonio was honored with the 2011 Outstanding Government Organization Award for its progressive efforts toward creating a greener, more energy efficient city.

11/9: Office of Cultural Affairs director receives Taiwan Cultural Ambassador Award

The Taiwan Council for Cultural Affairs recognized Felix Padron, director of the City of San Antonio's Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA), with the Taiwan Cultural Ambassador Award at a special ceremony held last month in Taipei.

The City of San Antonio's Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) is hosting a workshop in collaboration with the Edwards Aquifer Authority on Nov. 8, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. at the South Texas Regional Training Center, 402 Carter Street in Hondo, Texas.

10/27: Free workshop features mentors, guidance for women in construction

The City of San Antonio’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) is hosting a women's mentoring roundtable discussion and workshop in collaboration with the Hispanic Contractors Association, ACCION Texas Business Center, and St. Mary's Neighborhood Revitalization Project on Nov. 15, 2011 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. Mary's University Center Auditorium, located at 1 Camino Santa Maria.

10/26: City co-hosts annual Diwali San Antonio Festival of Lights in celebration of Indian culture and traditions

Downtown San Antonio will be aglow on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011 with the third annual Diwali San Antonio Festival of Lights. This year's event takes place once again at HemisFair Park by the Tower of the Americas and runs from 5-10 p.m. Hosted by the City of San Antonio's International Relations office, the India Association of San Antonio (IASA) and the Alamo Asian American Chamber of Commerce, this free event celebrates Indian culture and traditions.

10/25: 2011 Electrification of Transportation Conference showcases latest innovations to local and regional attendees

The City of San Antonio, in partnership with the Alamo Area Council of Governments Clean Cities Coalition, CPS Energy and the San Antonio Auto Dealers Association, present the second annual Electrification of Transportation Conference at San Antonio's Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center Oct. 26-27, 2011. The conference seeks to advance transportation choices and economic development within the region.

10/21: Downtown Strategic Framework Plan lays out strategy to bring more people, more jobs, more activity to the Center City

Centro Partnership San Antonio is hosting a public workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Banquet Center, located at 308 Avenue E, to unveil the Downtown Strategic Framework Plan.

10/20: San Antonio River Walk will stay full this January

The annual draining of the San Antonio River Walk is moving to a new bi-annual schedule, keeping the river full on even numbered years, beginning January 2012. This is a result of the joint project completed by the City's Public Works and Downtown Operations departments to improve the water quality and clarity along the San Antonio River Walk.

10/19: City continues its mentor participation in Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas

Mayor Julián Castro, City Council Members Rey Saldaña, Diego Bernal, and Ivy Taylor, City Manager Sheryl Sculley and City executives are just some of the newest "Bigs" (mentors) to "Littles" (mentees) for Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas. Throughout this school year, they will mentor 8th graders from Wheatley Middle School from the San Antonio Independent School District. The program helps students to develop one-on-one relationships with business professionals and introduces them to various career possibilities.

10/10: Contracting opportunities at Lackland Air Force Base focus of free information session

The Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), a program administered by the City's Planning and Community Development Department, joined forces with Skanska USA Building Inc., the Hispanic Contractors Association de San Antonio, and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, to offer a free information session about opportunities for small, women-owned, small-disadvantaged, veteran-owned, service-disabled veteran-owned and HUBZone business concerns.

10/2: City will temporarily relocate some Downtown City offices and close sections of two streets due to weekend fire

As a result of the Saturday morning four-alarm fire that took place downtown at W. Commerce Street and Main Street, an emergency demolition will be needed of the Main Street Ballroom, Poblanos on Main Mexican Food Restaurant, Mama's Cafe's headquarters offices, and Meat Market Barbecue. The fire took place adjacent to the Riverview Tower building that suffered fire damage and houses several City of San Antonio offices.

9/30: River Walk Stationary Designated Public Space Vending Permit applications to be made available on October 5

Vendors interested in selling novelty items on the River Walk at one of the six designated stationary sites will have the opportunity to participate in a lottery drawing process on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 9:30 a.m. at the Central Library Auditorium, located at 600 Soledad. To participate in the lottery, vendors must complete an application and fulfill other necessary requirements. An informational session to provide an overview of the program will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 9:30 a.m. at the Central Library Auditorium, 600 Soledad.

The City of San Antonio's Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) will host a seminar from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011, at the Central Library Auditorium, located at 600 Soledad, for small business owners needing information on the new programs offered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security regarding labor verification and compliance.

9/29: Have a hauntingly good time at the Eastside Cemeteries Tour

Add a pair of walking or running shoes to your Halloween costume and visit some of the city's most historical cemeteries on the Eastside during the Go! Historic SA Guided Running and Walking Tours on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011 at 8:30 a.m. Hosted by the City's Office of Historic Preservation, the historic Eastside Cemeteries District provides a perfect setting for the fall tour. Participants are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes.

9/23: City's Green and Healthy Homes program awarded $4.1 million to aid low income residents with safer and healthier homes

The San Antonio Green and Healthy Homes program, an initiative of the City's Planning and Community Development Department, was awarded more than $4.1 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The much-needed funds will be used to help eligible San Antonio homeowners and landlords of single family homes protect their families from safety hazards and live in healthier, sustainable homes.

9/23: Interactive River Walk Tour selected for International Downtown Association Merit Award

The City of San Antonio was recognized with the International Downtown Association's (IDA) Downtown Merit Award for its work on the Historic Hugman River Walk Tour. The free, interactive initiative allows the public to explore the River Walk's history while using emerging technology.

9/16: City of San Antonio institutes temporary prohibition of barbecuing, expands smoking prohibition in City parks

City of San Antonio officials announced Friday that they are proceeding with a temporary prohibition on open flames in city parks, to include barbecuing. The prohibition, which includes the use of propane, charcoal or wood barbecue pits, is a preventative measure due to severe drought conditions. Although brief, scattered rains Friday morning were welcomed, officials concurred that they were not sufficient to alleviate the severe drought conditions that make the prohibition necessary.

9/15: Wood Window workshop set

The City's Office of Historic Preservation is hosting a Wood Window Workshop on September 16 and 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the historic Acosta/Halff House in HemisFair Park. Participants will rehabilitate the existing windows of the home and gain valuable knowledge about wood window restoration. The workshop is a hands-on opportunity to learn how to save thousands of dollars through simple do-it-yourself techniques and proper window maintenance.

9/15: Argo Group invests in downtown San Antonio economy

The City of San Antonio and Argo Group (NasdaqGS: AGII) announced today the international insurance underwriter plans to relocate the headquarters of Argo Group US Inc. and all of its other San Antonio operations located near the airport to the IBC Centre downtown on 175 E. Houston Street by June 30, 2012. The move will retain in excess of 200 full-time jobs for the local economy.

9/14: Free San Antonio Green and Healthy Homes Lead Awareness Fair to tackle Bexar County's high lead poisoning rate

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly a quarter of a million children living in the United States have blood lead levels high enough to cause significant damage to their health.* Locally, Bexar County has the second highest rate of blood lead poisoning in the State of Texas, with children living in the 78207 and 78202 zip codes at most risk.** To raise awareness of this issue, the City's Planning and Community Development Department is hosting the San Antonio Green and Healthy Homes Lead Awareness Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011 at the Sonny Melendrez Community Center, 5909 W. Commerce. The event is free.

9/13: City makes vendor registration process easier

The City of San Antonio has made the vendor registration process more user-friendly and efficient by streamlining its new e-procurement system. Vendors and suppliers who are interested in doing business with the City must register online to be included in the new centralized vendor registry, a feature of the San Antonio e-Procurement System (SAePS). The system will administer all sourcing, procurement, transaction processing, order management and payment support functions for the City.

9/12: Planning Commission seeks applicants

The City of San Antonio is seeking applicants to fill four available positions on the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission advises the City Council on the master plan for the physical development of San Antonio. The commission also provides recommendations on capital improvements and administers regulations on subdivisions and platting, to include the extra-territorial jurisdiction. Each term is for two years.

The San Antonio and Bexar County Head Start Policy Council is seeking applicants to fill eight community representative positions. 9/7: Free seminar offers tips on doing business with the State of Texas

Business owners interested in learning how to do business with the State of Texas are invited to attend a free seminar from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at the Central Library auditorium, located at 600 Soledad. Hosted by the City's Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), the seminar offers an introduction to certification and information about purchasing opportunities with the State.

9/6: Downtown Holiday lights in the summer?

Although the dog days of summer are an unusual time to talk about holiday decorations, Mayor Julián Castro, Councilman Diego Bernal and City Manager Sheryl Sculley got into the festive spirit and today announced the inaugural Light Up Downtown Holiday Contest as the Municipal Plaza Building lit up the downtown skyline. All downtown business owners are encouraged to participate in the program and compete for the most decorative and creative use of LED lights this upcoming holiday season.

8/30: City's Graffiti Abatement Program encourages residents to volunteer to help wipe out graffiti

Nationally, each year, graffiti costs Americans more than $8 billion, according to GraffitiHurts.org, while also hurting property values and driving away businesses. Locally, the City of San Antonio abates more than 3.5 million square feet of graffiti each year-and it is done with the help of hundreds of local volunteers as committed as the City is to stopping graffiti.

8/25: Thirty-seven cooling locations available to seniors and others at risk

In the midst of another heat advisory this summer, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District (SAMHD) identified 37 cooling locations throughout the city for residents needing to cool off during these high-temperature days. SAMHD also asks the community to keep a close watch on neighbors or relatives affected most by excessive heat conditions, usually infants, young children and the elderly.

8/19: Retired downtown parking meters converted into donation stations to support the City's homeless programs

To raise awareness of homelessness in San Antonio, the City of San Antonio converted retired parking meters into donation stations throughout the downtown area. Coins collected will support homeless programs at Haven for Hope. Each night, 2,500 people sleep on San Antonio streets.

8/18: ACS seeking donations for a different kind of "flea market"

Animal Care Services is gearing up for the shelter's annual Project Re-Tail rummage sale Saturday, September 17 and the shelter is need of donations of gently used pet items. Project Re-Tail will feature new-to-you supplies, decor and gear at "dog gone" good prices to benefit ACS' four legged residents.

San Antonio Metropolitan Health District is notifying the community of a Heat Advisory. When the daytime heat index values are 105 degrees or greater, and the minimum ambient air temperature is not expected to fall below 80 degrees Fahrenheit for two consecutive days, the City of San Antonio advises the community of a Heat Advisory - Level II

8/11: District hearings provide residents an opportunity to comment on 2012 Proposed City Budget

San Antonio residents are invited to provide their comments on the City's Fiscal Year 2012 Proposed Budget by attending community hearings in each Council district. The hearings are set to begin Monday, August 15. The FY 2012 Proposed Budget will be presented to City Council today, Thursday, August 11.

7/13: City's High Bond Rating Affirmed

The City of San Antonio's 'AAA' general obligation bond rating has been affirmed by the three major bond rating agencies, Standard & Poor's, Fitch, and Moody's. The 'AAA' bond rating is the highest credit rating that an entity can receive. San Antonio is the only city with a population of more than 1 million to receive a 'AAA' general obligation rating from all three major rating agencies.

The Office of Historic Preservation has created a new position that will help preserve historic areas in the city. As the new Historic Building Enforcement Officer, Ron Meyers is responsible for investigating violations in historic districts, local landmarks, and River Improvement Overlay districts, and educating property owners on requirements for changes to historic properties.

7/8: Emergency assistance available to homeowners facing foreclosure

Recognizing the difficulties of homeowners facing foreclosure, the City of San Antonio would like to make citizens aware of the Emergency Homeowner's Loan Program (EHLP), an initiative of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) which can provide emergency assistance to homeowners facing foreclosure. 6/23: City announces $3.3 million for UT Health Science Center's new South Texas Research Facility

San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro and City Manager Sheryl Sculley, with full support of the City Council, today announced a $3.3 million grant to the UT Health Science Center San Antonio to finish construction of its South Texas Research Facility (STRF). The $150 million STRF, the largest research building ever erected in Bexar County, will house at least 350 scientists and staff.

The City of San Antonio and the Greater San Antonio Builders Association (GSABA) today celebrated the opening of the Tierra del Sol subdivision on the City's west side with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The City's Office of Environmental policy is now accepting nominations for the third annual Green Building Awards.

3/31: San Antonio's Building Code effectiveness receives high rating

The City of San Antonio's Development Services Department was awarded a Class 2 rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) for its effectiveness in enforcing building codes in commercial and residential construction. San Antonio is the first large city in Texas to receive this rating. According to the ISO, only 18 percent of its evaluations receive a Class 1, 2 or 3 rating. Effective enforcement leads to safer buildings, less damage from catastrophes and lower insured losses.

As San Antonio gears up for an early Fiesta® celebration, the City unveiled its 2011 limited edition Fiesta® medal. This year's medal design takes on the likeness of the new public artwork entitled "Lumen" by Seattle-based artist Ann Gardner.

3/2: City implements new e-procurement system

Vendors and suppliers who are interested in doing business with the City of San Antonio must register online to be included in the new centralized vendor registry, a feature of the San Antonio e-Procurement System (SAePS). Once implemented, the new e-procurement system will administer all sourcing, procurement, transaction processing, order management and payment support functions for the City.

The 15th annual Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice is set for Saturday, March 26. The March and several upcoming events will commemorate the legacy of civil rights and labor leader Cesar E. Chavez.

A San Antonio gem once thought to be lost has been found and now has a new home. The Office of the City Clerk announced the discovery of the City Surveyor Book One (December 7, 1847 through February 14, 1882.)

3/1: City's Solid Waste Management Department set to host HHW blowout this weekend

The City of San Antonio will be hosting a household hazardous waste (HHW) blowout this Saturday, March 5. The events will take place at the Southeast Service Center, 7402 South New Braunfels, the seasonal HHW site located at the Bitters Brush Recycling Center, 1800 Bitters Road, and the HHW Drop-off Center, 7030 Culebra Road. The HHW mobile event at the Southeast Service Center will run from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. while the Bitters seasonal site and Culebra drop-off location will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

2/25: City announces Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) Home Ownership Fair

The City of San Antonio's Office of Grants Monitoring and Administration today announced details of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) Home Ownership Fair, scheduled for Saturday, March 12 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Clubhouse at Sutton Oaks, located at 2818 N Panam Expressway (IH-35N) near the AT&T Center.

Vendors who are interested in selling raspas/sno-cones in Alamo Plaza will have the opportunity to participate in a lottery drawing process. To participate in the lottery, vendors must complete an application and other necessary requirements. The City's Downtown Operations Department will begin accepting applications for the Special Downtown Mobile Food Vending Program beginning Wednesday, March 2 through Wednesday, March 16.

2/25: City seeks Board applicants for development in Southeast neighborhoods

Members of the community have the opportunity to help make decisions about how public money is spent, developing the Southeast side of San Antonio and serve the community in a greater sense. The City of San Antonio is seeking board applicants for the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) Highland Heights #4. The deadline to submit an application is Friday, March 4, 2011.

2/24: Primer Sabado celebrates "March Madness" in Market Square

Join the City's Downtown Operations Department on Saturday, March 5 from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. to celebrate Primer Sabado's "March Madness" in Market Square featuring a special appearance from the San Antonio Spurs mascot - the Coyote in addition to basketball theme activities and drawings for tickets to an upcoming Spurs game. Primer Sabado is free and open to the public.

2/23: Second opportunity to review and comment on draft design standards and proposed base rezoning for the South Presa Metropolitan Corridor

2/22: City offers opportunities for payment before warrant roundup

San Antonio will join 200 cities across Texas for the 5th Annual Statewide Warrant Roundup. Individuals with outstanding class C fines related to misdemeanor violations such as traffic violations and City ordinance violations will have from now until March 4 to submit payment under a pre-roundup grace period without fear of arrest.

2/22: Community Invited to Stay Active with Free "Fitness in the Park"

The Mayor's Fitness Council, the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, and the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department invite all San Antonians to "Find your Balance – for your health, your family, your future," by participating in a new series of free fitness classes in a dozen city parks.

2/18: Now reporting graffiti is just an app away

Reporting graffiti in San Antonio just got a touch easier. The City's Graffiti Abatement Program has teamed up with App-Order.com to create "mySanAntonioTX" smart phone application that will allow residents with Android phones to send real time graffiti information and photos to the department.

2/18: A "Complete Street" Makeover: Transforming Harry Wurzbach Road into 'TAPS Memorial Boulevard'

To completely overhaul the aesthetics, traffic mobility, and sustainability of this rather venerable old roadway is the overarching goal of this new project. Commissioned by Councilman John Clamp, District 10, this long overdue "makeover" seeks to take maximum advantage of what he refers to as the "long-neglected portal to Fort Sam Houston's front door." To prepare the ground work for the transformation of this diamond-in-the-rough, Dixie Watkins III & Associates (DWA) was retained to prepare a conceptual planning and design study for the full length of this four-mile corridor

Saturday, February 19, the City's Solid Waste Management Department will be offering residents free landscaping mulch and free paper lawn/leaf bags to help San Antonio residents get an early start on their spring lawn care.

2/14: Presidents' Day holiday schedule of City services

Garbage, recyclables and brush will be collected on Monday, February 21, while City Hall and most municipal offices will be closed to observe the Presidents' Day holiday.

2/11: NCR to offer free workshop on incentive programs for small businesses

The Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization Program (NCR), administered by the City's Planning and Community Development Department will offer a free workshop entitled "You're in the Zone! Know Your Area's Benefits" from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 17 at the Cliff Morton Development and Business Services Center, located at 1901 South Alamo.

The City of San Antonio and the San Antonio River Authority, with input from plan area and community-wide stakeholders, have drafted the MidTown Brackenridge Master Plan and want to hear from you. The City's Graffiti Abatement Program is now accepting applications for After School Art in Action a free sixteen-week after school arts program created in collaboration with Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU).

2/1: City's new brush program in full gear

The City's Solid Waste Management Department's new brush program is in full gear. Under the new program, residents will receive two brush pickup services a year and one bulky item service a year. The new changes will allow the department to recycle more clean brush and help increase the City's recycling rate of brush from 19 percent to approximately 28 percent. Overall, the City has a recycling goal of 60 percent by 2020.

1/27: Federal Empowerment Zone Designation Extended

The Center City Development Office (CCDO) today announced that the City's Federal Empowerment Zone (EZ) designation has been extended through the end of 2011. The extension was included in the Middle Class Tax Relief Act (H.R. 4853), approved by Congress on December 15, 2010.

1/27: Electric vehicle charger rebate now available

The electric vehicle charger rebate is now available. The City's Office of Environmental Policy in partnership with CPS Energy is now offering the rebates on a first come, first serve basis.

1/25: Houston Street Two-Step kicks off annual Rodeo events

More than 40 Longhorn cattle guided by authentic cowboys on horseback will take to Houston Street to kick off the Houston Street Two-Step this Saturday, January 29 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The Houston Street Two-Step which features - Step One: the Cattle Drive and Step Two: the Houston Street Stroll is the premier event to the 2011 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo and is free to the public.

1/25: Public invited to discuss revitalization strategies for Walzem area

Business owners, residents, property owners, and others interested in the future of the Walzem area are invited to attend a public meeting this Saturday, January 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at John Calvin Presbyterian Church, 8102 Midcrown Drive. The "Ceremonial Recognitions" and "Citizens to be Heard" portions of the regular City Council Meeting A Session will move to the Wednesday council work session effective February 2 starting at 5:15 p.m. These new changes will not affect citizens' opportunity to address City Council on specific agenda items during the regular council meeting on Thursdays.

1/24: Service project helps revitalize homes in historic Dignowity Hill

The City's Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) is coordinating a four-day service project with students from UTSA's College of Architecture to help promote revitalization in the Dignowity Hill Historic District neighborhood on San Antonio's eastside. More than 200 undergraduate and graduate students will participate in the S.T.A.R. (Students Together Achieving Revitalization) project which will take March 26-27 and April 2-3.

The City of San Antonio's Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), is offering a seminar entitled Do Your Homework: Certifications and Registrations. The City of San Antonio is seeking applicants for Tax Increment Reinvestment Zones (TIRZ) Verano #28 and Brooks City-Base TIRZ #16. Each of these zones was designated to support development in the southern section of the city.

In one week, months of planning and event preparation will come to an end as San Antonio celebrates the 2011 MLK March and Commemoration on Monday, January 17. This year will mark the 24th anniversary of the City of San Antonio's legacy of joining with community members to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of this nation's most revered civil rights leaders. It will also mark the beginning of the event going "green" as recycling will be offered throughout Pittman-Sullivan Park during the commemoration celebration.

1/5: New year brings changes to City's bagged leaves collection program

It's a new year and times are a-changin when it comes to the City's bagged leaves collection program. Residential customers are still eligible to receive two free collections of grass clippings and leaves per fiscal year up to 50 bags, but now residents are required to use paper bags or cardboard boxes for those collections. The City will no longer pick up grass clippings or leaves placed in plastic bags.

1/4: Christmas tree recycling program starts this weekend

Starting this weekend, January 8 and 9 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. San Antonio residents are asked to take part in a holiday "tree-dition" by recycling their fresh cut Christmas trees at one of the 21 drop-off locations across the city.

1/4: Final presentations of Los Pastores begins this weekend

Councilwoman Ivy R. Taylor will attend the grand opening of the Montabella Pointe Apartments, 5121 N. Foster Rd., on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 from 10 a.m. to noon.

9/23: Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos hosts free Get Moving & Step Into Shape event at Pytel Park

On Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos, along with several Seniors and Southside residents, will gear up and head out to Pytel Park, located at 6220 S. New Braunfels Ave, at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, for the Get Moving & Step Into Shape event as part of the Get Fit Southside initiative.

9/21: Councilwoman Taylor hosts District 2 town hall meeting

Councilwoman Ivy R. Taylor will host a Town Hall Meeting on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the District 2 Senior Center, 1751 S. W.W. White Rd., from 9-11 a.m. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m.

8/23: District 4 Back-to-School Health Fair sets attendance, immunization records

Approximately 4,000 people attended this year's District 4 Back to School Health Fair with 1,902 children receiving medical services, setting an all-time record for the number of children receiving immunizations at the annual event. Councilman Rey Saldaña and CentroMed sponsored the fair held this past Saturday at CentroMed Southwest Branch Clinic.

8/19: Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos Attended Dedication of Mission San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo Mission

On Friday, August 19, 2011, District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos, along with several other dignitaries and parishioners, attended the Mass of Dedication for the Mission San Jose. Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller dedicated Mission San Jose to celebrate the completion of the renovation of the historic Mission located at 701 E. Pyron.

8/9: Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos Hosts Fitness 101 Kids Walk and 4th Annual Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway

On Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos and Get Fit SATX, will host the "Fitness 101: Back-to-School Kids Walk and 4th Annual Backpack Giveaway." The event will take place at Mission Branch Library, 3134 Roosevelt Ave., at 8 a.m. and is the second of a series of free monthly fitness events that the Councilwoman is hosting throughout the remainder of the year.

7/8: Volunteers needed

Residents of District 4 are encouraged to get involved in local government. Councilman Rey Saldaña is seeking candidates for the CPS Energy Citizens Advisory Committee.

7/5: New Multi-Service Senior Center Opens in District 6

City Councilman Ray Lopez joined San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro, WellMed Charitable Foundation Co-Founder Richard Manning, and invited guests to officially open the doors to the new co-operated Alicia Treviño Lopez Senior One Stop Center serving the District 6 senior community on Tuesday, July 5.

7/1: Councilwoman Ramos Invites Southside Community to Get Fit

On Saturday, July 2, District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos will kickoff "Get Fit Southside SATX," a new health initiative launched on the city's South Side to help motivate the community to get fit. The event is at Southside Lions Park at 9:30 a.m. near the corner of Hiawatha and Meadowlark. It will be the first of a series of free monthly fitness events that Councilwoman Ramos will be hosting throughout the remainder of the year.

7/1: Barbecue Safety Encouraged for Holiday Celebrations

District 7 City Councilman Cris Medina is joining the San Antonio Fire Department, the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, and the San Antonio Parks Foundation to encourage residents to have a fun, safe July 4th celebration this year. Extreme drought conditions in San Antonio have led to fire-prone dry grass and brush throughout the city. Although all fireworks have been banned, citizens are still able to barbecue at Woodlawn Lake Park, where the annual Fourth of July celebration will be held.

6/27: Councilwoman Ramos Helps Dedicate New Mission Trails Hospital on the South Side

On Monday, June 27, District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos was part of the Dedication Ceremony of the brand new Mission Trails Baptist Hospital. The event signified the grand opening of the state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly new hospital that will serve patients from both San Antonio and South Texas.

6/23: Mission Reach brings revitalization to District 3

On Saturday, June 25, District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos will commemorate the Grand Opening of the Mission Reach Project, phases I and II. The event will take place on the Theo Avenue bridge where an Opening Ceremony will be held that will feature several elected officials and dignitaries making public remarks. A Community Celebration will then follow on Lone Star Boulevard and Mission Road. The event will run from 10:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.

6/9: Founder of the San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. March Passes

Eastside native and originator of the San Antonio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) March, Reverend R.A. Callies, passed away early this morning. Reverend Callies was a pastor at First Gethsemane Baptist Church.

6/6: District 6 Multi-Service Senior Center Open House


The City's newest multi-service senior center will open its doors to serve the seniors in the District 6 area on Tuesday, June 7.

5/20: Chavez family, UFW applaud City Council vote for new Cesar E. Chavez Blvd. in San Antonio

Cesar Chavez Foundation President Paul F. Chavez, middle son of the farm labor and civil rights leader, and United Farm Workers President Arturo S. Rodriguez issued the following joint statement from the farm worker movement headquarters in Keene, Calif. following the San Antonio City Council's enactment of an ordinance changing Durango Blvd. to Cesar E. Chavez Blvd., stretching from the Eastside to the Westside of San Antonio across two international freeways, IH 37 and IH 35.

5/12: San Antonio Food Bank acquires five acres from City for expansion

Today the San Antonio City Council approved the conveyance of 5.551 acres of vacant city-owned property to the San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB). The property is located in the Southwest Business and Technology Park (SWBTP) at State Highway 151 and Old Highway 90 in City Council District 6.

4/29:Councilwoman Jennifer Ramos to Open Mission Branch Library in Council District 3

The culmination of four years of hard work will be realized this Saturday, April 30 when Councilwoman Jennifer Ramos will dedicate the new Mission Branch Library. Councilwoman Ramos' involvement with the project began as a council aide for Roland Gutierrez in 2007, and the project has been a top priority for District 3 ever since.
 

4/18: NuStar Energy to Make $76 million Investment in San Antonio Council District 3

District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer Ramos announced that NuStar Energy acquired AGE Refinery on Thursday, April 14, 2011. This acquisition represents an investment of $76 million in the Southside of San Antonio that will enhance employment opportunities for the community while improving the jobs of the approximately 90 employees already working at the facility.

3/25: Councilman Medina breaks ground on Palestine Road improvements

On Monday, March 21, District 5 Councilman David Medina, Jr. held a ground breaking ceremony for a sidewalk improvement project on Palestine Road from Quintana to Creighton Avenue.
 

3/25: Councilwoman Ramos to unveil and formally dedicate Sgt. Matthew E. Mendoza USMC Park

During a public hearing in September 2010, Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos initiated the naming of newly-acquired park space in District 3 to be named in honor of fallen Marine and son U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Matthew E. Mendoza. On December 9, 2010, City Council unanimously voted to adopt an ordinance naming the new park in honor of him. The park is located at 5206 Hillje Street.

3/22:Councilwoman Taylor seeks applicants for the District 2 Life Skills Academy

Councilwoman Ivy R. Taylor and several community stake holders have developed and implemented the District 2 Life Skills Academy. The purpose of this program is to empower our youth and young adults with the appropriate skill set and knowledge to be successful in college, the business world and beyond.

3/11: District 2 unveils new multi-service center for senior residents

Councilwoman Ivy R. Taylor led City staff and crowds of senior residents in the grand opening of the new District 2 Senior Center. The 8,000 square foot facility located at 1751 South W. W. White Rd. is set to provide noon meals and a host of wellness, education, and comprehensive assistance services to seniors 60 years of age and older.

3/1: Council District 10 Scholarship program deadline approaching
The District 10 College Scholarship Program  is offered to high school seniors who live in City Council District 10. Students who wish to apply for the District 10 scholarship will be required to submit a scholarship package and meet eligibility requirements. Scholarship packages are due by March 31.

New demographic data from the U.S. Census Bureau confirms San Antonio's rising prominence as one of America's fastest growing big cities, fueled by explosive growth in the Hispanic population and a growing job base in 21st century industries.

2/10: Councilman John G. Clamp announces the start of the Salado Creek Connector Project

Today, the City Council voted to move forward and construct the connection of the North Salado Creek Greenway Trails from Los Patios to the Robert L.B. Tobin Park Trailhead.

1/28: Councilman John G. Clamp supports Soccer for a Cause

District 10 Councilman John Clamp believes that despite all of the controversy, Gordon Hartman's plans to bring a NASL soccer team to San Antonio has real merit.

1/21: Northern Hills Golf Course re-zoned using the new "G" designation

On Thursday, January 20, City Council voted to rezone the Northern Hills Golf Course from MF-33, a multi-family zoning, to the new Golf Zoning District. This new zoning district will preserve the existing golf course and green space.

1/18: Councilwoman Elisa Chan to Host 2011 District 9 Town Hall Meeting

Councilwoman Elisa Chan will be hosting her 2011 Town Hall meeting tonight, January 18, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Parkhills Baptist Church, 17747 San Pedro Avenue.

1/14: Texting and Driving Ban in Effect as of Tomorrow, January 15

District 4 City Councilman Philip Cortez would like to remind all San Antonio drivers that beginning tomorrow, Saturday, January 15, drivers caught texting behind the wheel will get a citation with a maximum fine of $200.

1/10: Councilman Reed Williams to host District 8 Townhall meeting

Councilman Reed Williams will host a District 8 Townhall Meeting tomorrow, January 11 at 6:00 p.m. at the Cody Library, 11441 Vance Jackson.
