7/2: Citizens reminded of parking regulations during First Friday


The City of San Antonio reminds citizens of the rules for parking during the First Friday events from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. in the Southtown and King William area. Residential parking regulations will be in effect tomorrow, Friday, July 3. No parking is allowed in neighborhoods surrounding the First Friday event. In addition, participants are advised to adhere to the City’s parking restrictions within neighborhoods and maintain roadway access for emergency vehicles.

 

7/2: City to hold forum on Small Business Policy Options

The City of San Antonio’s Small Business Advocacy Committee (SBAC) will hold a business stakeholders meeting from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, at the Municipal Plaza Building – B Room, 114 W. Commerce. Attendees will review and comment on preliminary policy options drawn from the Disparity Study recommendations, adopted by City Council on June 25, and previous input from the business community.

Summer recycle tip #4: Make your Independence Day celebration green

It’s Independence Day, time to celebrate the Red, White and Blue but it’s also time to celebrate being green. Here is another helpful recycling tip from the City's Solid Waste Management Department that will help you recycle this summer.

7/1: STWBC announces business plan competition


The City’s South Texas Women’s Business Center (STWBC) has kicked off its first annual business plan competition. The finalists of the business plan will be judged at STWBC’s Women’s Business Symposium on August 28 at the Norris Conference Center at Crossroads Mall, 4522 Fredericksburg Road, during the Symposium’s luncheon.

6/25: New mascot makes big Texas debut

Next week San Antonio will give a big Texas welcome to the City’s Solid Waste Management Department’s latest addition to help San Antonio recycle. Donning a cowboy hat and boots, “Carter” the two-cart mascot will make his debut to teach us all just how easy it is to bag in brown and recycle in blue.

6/25: Council votes to accept Disparity Study

At an A Session Public Hearing held today, City Council voted to accept the findings and recommendations of the 2009 San Antonio Regional Business Disparity Causation Analysis Study (Disparity Study) for the purposes policy development.


6/24: Independence Day holiday schedule of City services

Garbage, recyclables and brush will be collected on Friday, July 3, while City Hall and most municipal offices will be closed to observe the Independence Day holiday.

6/23: Window Restoration Workshop

The City’s Office of Historic Preservation and the University of Texas San Antonio will offer a second interactive wood window workshop July 31 and August 1.


6/23: City Council to hold public hearing on use of Disparity Study in policy development

On Thursday, June 25, City Council will hold a public hearing on the findings and recommendations of the 2009 San Antonio Regional Business Disparity Causation Analysis Study (Disparity Study). The public hearing will take place at 1:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 103 Main Plaza.

6/23: Garbage and recyclable collections for Independence Day

Residents who receive garbage or recyclable collection on Friday or Saturday will receive their collection during the Fourth of July holiday.
However, the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Drop-off Site, 7030 Culebra, will not be open for service July 3 or July 4.


6/23: Declare the holiday an independence day from junk

After the holiday festivities are over, declare your independence from household junk by taking part in the City’s free landfill disposal day on Saturday, July 11. Residents are invited to load up all of their unwanted items such as old sofas, mattresses, household appliances or even car tires (six tires per household) and leave them at one of the five designated drop-off locations from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. No hazardous waste will be accepted.


6/19: Public meetings set to discuss digital off-premise sign ordinance

The City’s Planning and Development Services Department is hosting four community meetings to discuss aspects of the 2007 pilot program digital off-premise sign ordinance. Topics include message timing, sign brightness, distance requirements and take down ratios.
 

6/18: Summer Recycling Tips - Tip #3: On the go doesn’t mean in the trash

Just because you’re drinking it in the car, it does not mean that it belongs in the trash. Here is another helpful recycling tip from the City's Solid Waste Management Department that will help you recycle this summer.


6/17: Community invited to attend Graffiti Workshop

It takes a community to fight graffiti that is the message that the City’s Housing and Neighborhood Services Department’s Graffiti Abatement Program would like to emphasize during the 2nd Annual Graffiti Workshop.

6/11: Summer Recycling Tips - Tip #2: Turn those caffeinated beans into a grease busting machine

If you are getting ready to fire up the barbecue grill, here is a helpful recycling tip from the City's Solid Waste Management Department that will help to shorten your cleaning time so you can spend more time with your friends and family instead of scrubbing down the grill. 


6/10: City to host 2nd Annual Graffiti Workshop

The 2nd Annual Graffiti Workshop is scheduled to take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Friday June 26 at the Carver Community Cultural Center, 226 N. Hackberry and Saturday, June 27 at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Theatre, 1301 Guadalupe.


6/10: Community Workshop #3 for Strategic Historic Preservation Plan

The City’s Office of Historic Preservation will hold a final Community Workshop from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, at the Development Services Building, 1901 S. Alamo, Training Rooms A & B, to review the Preliminary Strategic Historic Preservation Plan.


6/10:
This week’s Movies by Moonlight takes viewers into the jungle of Madagascar

It’s the call of the wild at the next Movies by Moonlight showing of the animated film Madagascar set for tomorrow, Thursday, June 11, at HemisFair Park. Showtime starts at 7:30 p.m. with pre-entertainment by the Woodlawn Theatre performing some scenes from High School Musical. The feature film will begin at 8:30 p.m.

 

6/8: PTAC to Host “Contractor’s Access to Capital”

The City of San Antonio’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), is offering a seminar entitled Contractor’s Access to Capital, a seminar to provide government contractors with information on various funding resources that are available to the small business community.


6/5: Head Start currently registering students

The San Antonio and Bexar County Head Start Program is currently registering new and returning students at several locations across the city and county.

6/5: Summer Recycling Tips - Tip #1: Save a bag…Don’t trash grass

Summer has arrived in San Antonio, which means it’s time for pool parties, picnics, the smell of fresh cut grass and overall fun in the Texas sun. While enjoying the great weather and overall freedom that summer has to offer, the City's Solid Waste Management Department would like to offer residents some helpful seasonal recycling tips for consideration.

6/3: Apply now for Transportation Advisory Board

Citizens are encouraged to get involved in local government. The Transportation Advisory Board makes recommendations to the Director of the San Antonio Police Department, in reference to City ordinances, rules, and regulations on the licensing and regulatory review process for transportation services licensed by the City. These services include taxicabs, limousines, tour/charter services, pedicabs, and horse carriages. The City of San Antonio is seeking applicants for the following categories:


5/28: Early Voting sites for June 13 Run-off Election scheduled

The City of San Antonio has added Ed White Middle School as an Early Voting Site in City Council District 2. However, eligible voters in City Council Districts 2, 5, and 8 can vote at anyone of the available Early Voting sites. Early Voting for the June 13 Run-off Election will be conducted from June 1 to June 9.

 

5/26: Don’t let cleaning products go down the drain

When you are finish using household cleaners, paint, lawn and garden products, or automotive fluids remember not to pour them down the drain, empty them in the trash, or dispose of them on the ground. Instead, bring them to the City's Solid Waste Management Department's mobile household hazardous waste event (HHW) on Saturday, June 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Dub Farris Athletic Complex, Loop 1604 at Hausman.

5/21: Memorial Day holiday schedule of City services

Garbage, recyclables and brush will be collected on Monday, May 25, while City Hall and most municipal offices will be closed to observe the Memorial Day holiday.

 

5/20: Don’t let a good can of paint go to waste

Do you have a good can of paint lying around your garage? If you have cans of paint sitting around your home collecting dust then the City has a proposition for you. The City’s Housing and Neighborhood Services Department’s Graffiti Abatement Program in partnership with the Solid Waste Management Department is looking to collect several good gallons of paint as they kick-off their annual paint drive to collect paint for the 2009 Graffiti Wipeout event.

5/19: Movies by Moonlight returns to HemisFair Park

The big screen will once again light up downtown’s HemisFair Park as the City’s Downtown Operations Department kicks off the outdoor cinema series Movies by Moonlight on Thursday, June 4.

 

5/13: City to host free seminar focusing on commercial location and home occupation requirements

The City's Economic Development Department (EDD) Small Business Division will host a free seminar on Wednesday, June 10 for prospective small business owners wanting to learn about commercial location and home occupation requirements. The workshop will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Frost Bank Tower, 100 West Houston St., Suite 1900.


5/13: Registration open for 2009 Community Development Summit

Registration is open for the 2009 Community Development Summit, scheduled for September 16 and September 17 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, located at 200 E. Market.

5/13: May 14 is the last day to register for June 13 run-off election

Tomorrow is the last day San Antonio residents in council districts 2, 5 and 8 to register to vote in the upcoming June 13 run-off election.


5/12: MLK Commission to award 2009 scholarship recipients

Twenty local high school seniors have been named 2009 MLK scholarship recipients. Mayor Phil Hardberger and the City Council will pay tribute to the MLK scholars as they are formally presented on Thursday, May 14 at 5:00 p.m. in the City Council Chamber, 103 Main Plaza. Each student will be awarded $1000 to assist them as they pursue a college degree.

5/11:City to host “Basic Training – The Government Way”

The City’s Economic Development Department’s Small Business Division program, the Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), is holding a seminar to educate new and existing businesses on federal government contracting.


5/8: City celebrated first Annual Green Building Awards

Today, the City of San Antonio celebrated the first annual Green Building Awards. The event celebrated organizations that have made significant strides in improving the sustainability of their buildings.


5/8: Public Meeting set to discuss Roosevelt Corridor Re-investment Plan

Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos and the City’s Planning and Development Services Department are holding a public meeting to discuss the proposed Roosevelt Corridor Re-investment Plan and Roosevelt Metropolitan Corridor Overlay District at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12 at the Gilbert Elementary School Cafeteria, located on 931 E. Southcross.

5/5: Public Meeting set to discuss updates to the Huebner/Leon Creeks Community Plan

Interested citizens and community stakeholders are invited to a public meeting to discuss the future land use plan for the Huebner/Leon Creeks Community on Saturday, May 9 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church, located at 6907 Kitchener Road. Residents, business, commercial property, and vacant land owners in the area are encouraged to attend to provide input on the plan, which was originally adopted in 2003.

 

5/4: Effective marketing strategies for small businesses

How do you create an effective marketing strategy for your small business? The City’s South Texas Women’s Business Center (STWBC) will help to reveal little known marketing secrets at their Platicas Lunch and Learn series entitled “21st Century Marketing” featuring Erik Darmstetter, of “Sales by 5.”


5/4: City celebrates National Historic Preservation Month

May is Historic Preservation Month. The Office of Historic Preservation is using this opportunity to recognize, discuss, and celebrate the cultural, aesthetic, environmental and economic value historic preservation brings to San Antonio. The theme for this year’s celebration is “This Place Matters.”


5/4: Call first before remodeling your home

Is the montage of home improvement shows giving you the urge to do some home remodeling? Before picking up a hammer and knocking out a wall, call the City’s Planning and Development Services Department to get the right information on obtaining permits and scheduling the proper inspections.
 

5/1: City to replay H1N1 Flu update news conference

The City’s Communications and Public Affairs Department will replay this morning’s H1N1 Flu update news conference. The news conference, conducted by Mayor Phil Hardberger, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff and other officials, provided residents with an update on the latest H1N1 Flu information.

 

4/29: Franchising your way to success

Ever wonder what it takes to be a part of a franchise. Entrepreneurs looking for an opportunity to understand the ins and outs of owning a franchise are invited to attend the South Texas Women’s Business Center (STWBC) lunch seminar entitled “Franchising: Opportunities for All” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6 at the STWBC Training Room, 100 W. Houston, 19th floor.

4/29: Building Safety: Where you Live, Work and Play

To raise awareness of the importance of building safety, the City’s Planning and Development Services Department is recognizing Building Safety Week: Where you Live, Work and Play, May 4 through May 8 with informational booths available from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Cliff Morton Development and Business Services Center, located at 1901 S. Alamo Street.

4/28: Tickets now available for the City’s First Annual Green Building Awards

Tickets are now available for the City’s first annual Green Building Awards. Ticket prices are $60 for individuals or $450 for a table of eight.


4/27: Lineup of guest speakers announced for City’s Historic Preservation community symposium

The City’s Office of Historic Preservation and the University of Texas at San Antonio have announced the lineup of guest speakers for the upcoming community symposium entitled “Window on Preservation.” The event, which is part of the City’s Historic Preservation Month celebration, will feature renowned preservation experts, Walter Sedovic, AIA, LEED, and Rudy Christian.


4/23:
Community invited to provide input on Strategic Historic Preservation Plan

The City’s Office of Historic Preservation is inviting the public to attend the second community workshop to discuss and provide input on the latest historic preservation activities and long-term preservation goals and objectives. The free workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29 from 6:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Development Services Building, 1901 S. Alamo, training rooms A and B.

 

4/22: Two New City Executives Appointed

City Manager Sheryl Sculley has appointed Frank Miller as Aviation Director, effective May 18, 2009. Additionally, City Manager Sculley appointed Gary Hendel as the City’s new Animal Care Services Director. Hendel begins his new position with the City on May 4, 2009.
 

4/21: Early voting for May 9 City election begins Monday

Early voting by personal appearance for the May 9 General Election begins Monday, April 27 and ends Tuesday, May 5. Early voting sites include the Bexar County Elections Office along with 36 other locations. The hours of voting by personal appearance vary. 4/17: San Antonio Building Codes Academy to host seminars focusing on fire code, building code changes

Registration for the San Antonio Building Codes Academy (SABCA) seminars on fire and building code changes is underway. Hosted by the City’s Planning and Development Services Department, the SABCA is scheduled for May 26 through May 29 at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center, room 103, located on 200 East Market Street.
 

4/16: City to enforce yard parking laws during Fiesta celebrations

As the city gears up for the Fiesta festivities, the City’s Housing and Neighborhood Services Code Compliance Division and the Police Department want to remind citizens that is illegal to park vehicles on front and side lawns or to sell your yard space for parking at anytime. This rule will be strictly enforced during such events as Fiesta Oyster Bake, Night in Old San Antonio, the King William Fair and other Fiesta celebrations.

4/16: Deadline extended for Municipal Civil Service Commission applicants

The deadline has been extended for individuals interested in serving as an alternate or regular Municipal Civil Service Commissioner. Interested applicants have until Friday, May 8 to submit an application. The selected individuals will be appointed by City Council and must be available to serve an initial two-year term. Appointed alternate or regular commissioners will be compensated $20 per meeting and provided free designated parking.

4/15: Prime Contractors

The City’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), is offering a free seminar, “Prime Contractor Connection,” to highlight prime contractors in the construction industry in the San Antonio area and provide guidance to local small businesses on their organization’s requirements for subcontracting opportunities.

4/15: Fiesta San Jacinto holiday schedule of City services

Garbage, recyclables and brush will be collected on Friday, April 24, while City Hall and most municipal offices will be closed to observe the Fiesta San Jacinto holiday.

 

4/14: Citizens reminded of neighborhood on-street parking regulations during Alamodome and downtown special events

With the 2009 Fiesta celebration just days away, the City’s Downtown Operations Department wants to remind citizens of the neighborhood on-street parking decal program rules for Alamodome and other downtown special events. This rule will be strictly enforced each day during the Fiesta Carnival starting Wednesday, April 15 through Sunday, April 26. Enforcement will be from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10:00 a.m. to midnight on weekends.

 

4/14: Community Initiatives to meet with parents for Head Start services during community meetings set for April, May and June

The City of San Antonio continues to provide information and outreach to families of children currently enrolled in Head Start. On April 9, City Council approved contracts and new Head Start providers are prepared to offer improved early education, health, nutrition and family support services throughout Bexar County beginning on August 24.

4/14: Fiesta 2009 events to close certain streets

Fiesta 2009 kicks off this Thursday, April 16.  Motorists will be diverted as the City closes several downtown and other streets to accommodate each event.

 

4/13: “Window on Preservation”

The City’s Office of Historic Preservation and the University of Texas at San Antonio will host a community symposium from 6:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 14 at the AIA Center for Architecture at the Pearl Brewery, 200 East Grayson.

4/10: Public hearing to be held for the San Antonio Regional Business Disparity Causation Analysis Study

The City’s Economic Development Department will hold a public hearing from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 17 at the Central Library, 600 Soledad, to discuss the findings and recommendations of the San Antonio Regional Business Disparity Causation Analysis Study.

4/9: South Texas Women’s Business Center Bi-Annual Roundtable

The City's Economic Development Department’s (EDD) South Texas Women’s Business Center (STWBC) will host their bi-annual "Mentoring: STWBC Style" brown bag lunch at the Central Public Library, 600 Soledad, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22.

4/8: City making strides in hiring more minority and women-owned businesses

Mayor Phil Hardberger and City Council members Wednesday were briefed on the results of a study designed to determine disparity rates in the awarding of City contracts to minority and women-owned businesses.

4/7: Time is running out to register to vote in the May 9 Election

Thursday, April 9, is the last day for citizens to register to vote in the City of San Antonio’s May 9 General Election. Early voting by personal appearance begins Monday, April 27 and ends Tuesday, May 5.

4/7: City of San Antonio and French Government introduce new Honorary Consul of France in San Antonio

The French Government has officially nominated San Antonio businessman James Lifshutz to become the next Honorary Consul of France in San Antonio. As Honorary Consul, Mr. Lifshutz is tasked with assisting and protecting French citizens in South Central Texas and facilitating trade and friendship between France and San Antonio.

4/7: Volunteers invited to participate in Brackenridge Park cleanup

When the barbecue pit smoke clears, mounds of trash often remains after the traditional Easter holiday festivities at Brackenridge Park. For that reason, the City of San Antonio, in partnership with the Brackenridge Park Conservancy, San Antonio River Authority and San Antonio Water System, is inviting citizens to join in a volunteer cleanup effort at the park, 3700 N. St. Mary’s St., from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 13. Volunteers may check in at the Joske Pavilion between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Refreshments will be available at 10:00 a.m. at Joske Pavilion in appreciation of volunteer efforts.

4/6: City offers free mulch during the month of April

Starting this weekend and for the rest of the month the City's Solid Waste Management Department will be offering residents free premium mulch at the Brush Recycling Center, 1800 Bitters Road.

4/6: City seeks applicants for Municipal Civil Service Commission

The City is looking to recruit individuals interested in serving as an alternate or permanent Municipal Civil Service Commissioner. The selected individuals will be appointed by City Council and must be available to serve an initial two-year term.

4/3: Head Start services to continue uninterrupted

The City of San Antonio affirms its commitment to ensure that all 6,789 children will continue receiving Head Start Services without interruption. In order to prepare parents for this change, the City and its Head Start partners will host informational meetings at Head Start Centers and other locations throughout the community, beginning the week of April 13 through the summer.

4/2: City’s Office of Environmental Policy’s web site goes live

The City of San Antonio’s Office of Environmental Policy’s web site is officially open for business.

3/31:
Export Leaders deadline extended

The deadline to register for the City’s 2009 Export Leaders program has been extended to April 24. Offered by the International Affairs Department, the program is designed to help local companies expand their business into the global marketplace.

3/26: Spring cleaning in full gear

Spring is in the air and so is spring cleaning. Residents are invited to get a jump start on their spring cleaning by taking part in the City-wide Cleanup Day on April 4.

3/26: City shines a beacon of light on this year’s Fiesta®

With Fiesta® San Antonio just around the corner, the City invites you display your San Antonio pride with the Official City Fiesta® 2009 Medal. Inspired by artist Angel Rodriguez-Diaz’s 2008 public art project, The Beacon, this year’s medal illuminates the true spirit of San Antonio’s cultural heritage.

 

3/25: City’s International Affairs Department launches 2009 San Antonio Export Leaders Program

The City of San Antonio’s International Affairs Department is accepting applications now for the 2009 San Antonio Export Leaders Program (SAELP). The program is designed for companies that are considering entering or expanding their position in the global marketplace. To date, 79 graduates have successfully generated more than $77 million after completing the program.
 

3/24: City’s PTAC to take part in seminar focusing on $2 Billion TxDOT Stimulus Projects

The City of San Antonio’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) will be providing information regarding the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and other federal government contracting opportunities at the South Central Texas Regional Certification Agency‘s (SCTRCA) seminar taking place on Monday, March 30, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the San Antonio Water System Main Building, 2800 U.S. Hwy 281 North at Mulberry Street.

3/23: 2009 Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice this Saturday

The 13th annual Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice is set for this Saturday, March 28. The march and several events will commemorate the legacy of civil rights and labor leader Cesar E. Chavez.
 

3/20: Camp Bullis land use draft report available

The public has several opportunities to review and comment on the Camp Bullis Draft Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) report. The Public Comment period for the JLUS process ends Friday, April 17.

3/19: Voelcker Park Phase II Plans available for viewing at Open House

Citizens are invited to a Voelcker Park Phase II Open House scheduled from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 30, at Coker United Methodist Church - John R. Gibbs Bldg. 1204, Upper Room, 231 E. North Loop Road.

3/18: City teams up with Citibank to offer $10,000 Facade Improvement Grant

The City’s Housing and Neighborhood Services Department’s Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization (NCR) division has teamed up with Citibank to offer a $10,000 Facade Improvement Grant.

3/18: City’s First Annual Green Building Awards extends nomination deadline

The deadline for nominations to be received for the City of San Antonio’s first annual Green Building Awards has been extended until Friday, April 3.

3/16: City looking for citizen input for its 2010 budget


In preparation for developing the Fiscal Year 2010 Budget, the City of San Antonio is looking for input from its employees and residents through its Budget Input Box program. Last year, this initiative brought forth more than 600 suggestions. Some of which were implemented in the FY 2009 Adopted Budget.

 

3/16: EDD free seminar to focus on the Texas Sales and Use Tax Permit

On Wednesday, April 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Frost Bank Tower, 100 West Houston St., Suite 1900, the City's Economic Development Department, Small Business Division will be hosting a free seminar for prospective business owners interested in learning about the Texas Sales and Use Tax Permit.

3/16: City’s new Flood Emergency Safety Program prepares residents for potential flooding emergencies


Today, the City’s Office of Emergency Management and Public Works Department joined District 8 Councilwoman Diane G. Cibrian and the City Council Public Safety Committee: District 7 Councilman Justin Rodriguez (chair), District 4 Councilman Philip Cortez, District 6 Councilwoman Delicia Herrera and District 10 Councilman John Clamp to announce a new comprehensive Emergency Management Program to mitigate risk to life and property posed by significant storm events.

 

3/13: Open House set for the Eastern Triangle Community Plan

The Eastern Triangle Community Plan Open House is set for Thursday, March 19, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Navajo Civic Center, located at 2600 Rigsby Avenue. Attendees will have an opportunity to review and comment on the draft plan.

Don’t let a few showers get in the way of your pre-spring cleaning, if you are looking for a way to dispose of old paint or lawn and garden products pile them up along with the other household hazardous waste (HHW) items you have lying around the house and bring them to the City's Solid Waste Management Department's mobile HHW event this Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium, 4002 Roosevelt.

3/5: Ambassador of Spain to the United States makes first official visit to San Antonio

The ambassador of Spain to the United States, His Excellency Jorge Dezcallar de Mazarredo, will visit San Antonio March 5–7 to explore new growth opportunities between Spain and San Antonio. Ambassador Dezcallar’s eagerness to visit San Antonio just a few months into his tenure speaks well of San Antonio’s growing international recognition, as well as the City’s efforts to strengthen its bonds with Spain through its Sister City programs in the Canary Islands.

3/4: Cesar Chavez college scholarships available


High School seniors and undergraduate college students living in Bexar County are encouraged to apply for the 2009 Cesar E. Chavez Scholarship. Each award will vary but are based on individual need and availability of funds. Scholarships start at $500.

The last day to file as a candidate for the May 9 City Council General Election is Monday, March 9. Applications will be accepted through 5:00 p.m. in the Office of the City Clerk located on the second floor of City Hall.

3/3: Community workshop for Strategic Historic Preservation Plan

The City’s Office of Historic Preservation will hold a community workshop from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11 at the Development Services Building, 1901 S. Alamo – Training Rooms A & B, in order to solicit input on the current historic preservation activities along with the long-term preservation goals and objectives.

3/3: Cesar Chavez student art competition deadline approaching


This Friday, March 6, is the deadline to submit items for the Cesar Chavez student art competition. All students Pre-K to 12th grade are encouraged to submit their artwork honoring the life and legacy of labor rights leader Cesar Chavez.

3/2: Final week begins for delayed warrant enforcement period


Individuals with outstanding misdemeanor warrants have until this Saturday, March 7 to submit payment and avoid the risk of arrest under a delayed enforcement period. Already, more than 8,175 warrants have been cleared at Municipal Court because of the delayed enforcement. The Great Texas Warrant Roundup is set to begin on Monday, March 9.

If you are getting ready to do your annual spring cleaning, make sure you do it right. Instead, bring them to the City's Solid Waste Management Department's mobile household hazardous waste event (HHW) on Saturday, March 14 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium, 4002 Roosevelt.

2/25: La Villita rededicates original St. Philip’s College building

The City’s Downtown Operations Department along with the La Villita Tenants Association and St. Philip’s College invite the community to a rededication of the historic St. Philip’s College building complex in its original site in the La Villita Historic Arts Village located at 418 Villita Street. This free event will be held on Sunday, March 1 from 12:15 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.

 

2/23: Two weeks left for high school seniors to apply for the 2009 MLK Scholarship

High school seniors who plan to pursue a college degree and are looking for financial assistance have two more weeks to apply for the 2009 Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 6. The City’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is currently accepting applications from graduating seniors who attend a high school within Bexar County.


2/23: Public meeting set to discuss land use plan, development goals for the Ingram Hills Neighborhood Plan

The Ingram Hills Neighborhood Plan meeting is set for Monday, March 2 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the International Bible Center cafeteria, located at 2369 Benrus Boulevard. All interested stakeholders are encouraged to attend. Participants will have an opportunity to review a draft of the future land use plan and a draft of the other development goals in the plan.

In an effort to recognize the achievements made by local builders in constructing energy and water efficient buildings, the City of San Antonio is proud to announce its first annual Green Building Awards.

Mayor Phil Hardberger will lead a delegation to Germany February 21 to March 2 to sign an Economic and Cultural Alliance with the City of Dresden and meet civic and business leaders in Berlin.

2/17: City announces payment options for individuals with outstanding warrants

In preparation for the Third Annual Great Texas Warrant Roundup, the City’s Municipal Court announced today that individuals who have unpaid fines related to misdemeanor violations such as traffic violations and City ordinance violations will have from now until March 6 to submit payment under a pre-roundup grace period.

 

2/13: State of the City Address replayed on TVSA

Mayor Phil Hardberger’s 2009 State of the City Address is being replayed continuously on TVSA, Cable Channel 21—the City’s government access channel, beginning today at 5:30 p.m. and will be replayed through February 27. The Address will air Mondays at 11:30 a.m.; Wednesdays at 8:00 a.m.; and Fridays at 5:30 p.m.

The City’s Economic Development Department’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) is hosting a small business seminar to help businesses learn how to compete for City contracts on Tuesday, February 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Development and Business Services (DBS) Center, located at 1901 S. 2/10: Public Meeting scheduled to discuss progress of Camp Bullis Joint Land Use Study


The City and the Camp Bullis Joint Land Use Study Executive Committee are hosting a public meeting to discuss the Camp Bullis Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18 in the B Room in the Municipal Plaza Building, located at 114 W. Commerce, across the street from City Hall.

2/10: Presidents’ Day holiday schedule of City services

Garbage, recyclables and brush will be collected on Monday, February 16, while City Hall and most municipal offices will be closed to observe the Presidents’ Day holiday.

 

2/4: City Council candidates can begin filing on Monday

The first day to file as a candidate for the May 9 City Council General Election is Monday, February 9. Applications will be accepted through 5:00 p.m. on March 9 in the Office of the City Clerk located on the second floor of City Hall.

2/4: San Antonio’s recycling efforts receive national recognition

The City of San Antonio is receiving national recognition for their recycling efforts. According to the latest edition of Men’s Health Magazine, San Antonio ranks third in the nation for recycling and recycling practices.

2/4: Headache free tax season

It’s tax season, a stressful time for most, but the City's Economic Development Department’s (EDD) South Texas Women’s Business Center (STWBC) is hoping to prevent a lot of the stress that business owners feel during this time of the year by hosting a seminar that will help participants understand IRS forms and the IRS process.

2/4: Small Business Advocacy Committee Seeking Applicants

Applicants are being sought for the Small Business Advocacy Committee. The Committee is comprised of 11 members appointed by the City Council and there are currently four vacancies (Districts 1, 5, 8 and Mayoral). The committee, supported by staff in the City’s Economic Development Department, functions as an advisory group by assisting the City Manager and City Council in reviewing the continuing programs of contractors and subcontractors concerning small, minority and women’s business participation.

2/3: Citizen Advisory Action Board seeking applicants

Applicants are being sought for the Citizen Advisory Action Board. The Board hears disciplinary cases that are brought forward by a complainant against a San Antonio police officer. This procedure applies only to non-criminal investigations of misconduct by employees. Meetings are held on Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m., and meeting duration is usually runs for two to five hours, depending on the agenda. Board members are also expected to dedicate time to reviewing misconduct cases prior to each board meeting.

1/30: Get a jump start on your spring cleaning

It’s time to get a jump start on your spring cleaning. Residents are invited to take part in the City’s free landfill disposal day on Saturday, February 7, by piling up unwanted items such as old sofas, mattresses, household appliances or even car tires (six tires per household) loading them up and leaving them at one of the five designated drop-off locations from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. No hazardous waste will be accepted.


1/27: Keep San Antonio Beautiful receives national recognition

The City’s Solid Waste Management Department’s Keep San Antonio Beautiful program has been awarded the Keep America Beautiful President’s Circle Award. The President’s Circle Award recognizes exemplary performance made by certified affiliates of the national nonprofit to reduce litter, minimize waste, and beautify and improve their local communities.


1/22: Frying up of Fiesta fun

The City’s Economic Development Department (EDD) Small Business Outreach Division will be hosting a free workshop on Wednesday, February 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Frost Bank Tower, 100 W. Houston St., Suite 1900, entitled “Preparing for Fiesta: Operating Your Own Food Stand.” The workshop is geared toward individuals interested in operating their own food stand business.

Xavier Urrutia has been appointed as the new Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of San Antonio by City Manager Sheryl Sculley. Urrutia’s position became effective, January 20, 2009.

 

1/20: Downtown transforms into the Wild West for Houston Street Fair and Market

More than 35 Longhorn cattle will mosey down Houston Street accompanied by the Texas A&M Calvary to kick off the rodeo-themed Houston Street Fair and Market (HSFM) on Saturday, January 31. The cattle drive will begin at 11:00 a.m. at IH-35 and Houston Street and travel east to the Alamo.

The City’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission honored a San Antonio bishop and local columnist at the 2009 MLK awards program held Saturday in the City Council Chamber.

1/16: City employee achieves highest level of code certification

The City’s Planning and Development Services Department is proud to announce that Senior Management Analyst Gary Kreutziger is the first City employee to obtain a Master Code Professional Certification. This is the highest International Code Council (ICC) certification for building code officials. Only 600 individuals worldwide have received the designation.

1/16: Historic and Design Review Commission Accepting Applications

The Historic and Design Review Commission (HDRC) goal is to preserve, protect and enhance historically, culturally, architecturally, and archaeologically significant sites, structures and permits in Historic Districts as well as development along the Riverwalk. They advise the City Council on issues affecting municipally owned art, structures and landscape design.

The portrait was painted by artist Angel Rodriguez-Diaz, whom the Mayor and Mrs. Linda Hardberger selected from among several artists who submitted samples. Mrs. Hardberger said they chose Rodriguez-Diaz because he’s a local artist and has a unique style.

On Saturday, May 16, District 4 Councilman Philip Cortez will join more than 200 volunteers from various organizations and schools to paint multiple murals on and around the Christa McAuliffe Junior High School campus.

 5/8: Councilman Clamp and colleagues to move forward with proposal to lower CPS Energy bills

In March, the office of City Councilman John Clamp brought forward an opportunity to minimize the costly fuel adjustment charge and lower CPS Energy bills. Councilman Clamp has asked CPS to evaluate using the revenue (grid sales) from energy sold to other utility companies to reduce the fuel adjustment charge impact on residential and business customers in the CPS service area. This proposal also explores the option of redirecting a portion of grid sales for future conservation efforts that could help lower energy consumption

5/8: Councilman Clamp receives council approval for the honorary name addition of TAPS Memorial Blvd.

On Thursday, May 7 the City Council unanimously approved the proposed honorary name TAPS Memorial Blvd to be added to Harry Wurzbach.

4/29: Early Voting Sites hosting Deaflink Services

Councilwoman Delicia Herrera wants to remind San Antonio residents that early voting will continue through Tuesday, May 5. Several early voting sites will include Deaflink video remote interpreting consoles. The Deaflink equipment allows hearing impaired voters to communicate with election officials.

4/23: Mayor Hardberger announces new process for filling SAWS Board of Trustees vacancies

Mayor Phil Hardberger Thursday announced a new process to be used in selecting Trustees for the San Antonio Water System Board. The process will be implemented immediately and used to fill the three upcoming vacancies in the Northwest, Northeast and Southwest Quadrants.


4/23: Vision for northeast multi-service senior center becomes a reality

The Department of Community Initiatives and the office of District 10 Councilman John Clamp are pleased to announce the grand opening of the Northeast Multi-Service Senior Center, located at 4355 Center Gate Drive. The grand opening will occur on Monday, April 27 and will begin with a news conference at 3:30 p.m. followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony, light meal and tours of the facility.

District 10 Councilman John Clamp will be in Austin today to testify against the proposed “Meet and Confer” legislation. There are currently three bills that address the “Meet and Confer” issue: H.B. 3686 and S.B. 2069 and S.B. 2446.

4/2: Historic First Rezoning Passed to Protect Camp Bullis

Today, Councilwoman Diane Cibrian and Councilman Louis Rowe announced the first rezoning of properties within three miles of the Camp Bullis Military installation to add the Military Lighting Overlay District (MLOD). Rezoning MLOD-1, the first overlay district located within City Council Districts 8 and 9, was passed in order to reduce excessive light pollution from interfering with nighttime military exercises.

3/23: “Be One in a Million” School Challenge

Councilwoman Diane Cibrian and Councilwoman Jennifer Ramos challenge all schools in San Antonio to participate in the Library’s “Be One in a Million” library card sign-up campaign. The councilwomen encourage students, parents, faculty, and staff to get San Antonio Public Library cards and have each offered $2,500 to support the competition. They also challenge the other eight council districts to match their contributions.

3/13: Councilman Clamp creates scholarship program for high school seniors

The District 10 College Scholarship Program, created by Councilman John G. Clamp, is the first scholarship program offered to high school seniors that live in City Council District 10. This scholarship program is intended to recognize and award seniors that have actively pursued community service while maintaining academic success.

District 10 Councilman John Clamp will participate in the Make a Wish Foundation’s second annual “Grant a Wish for St. Patrick’s Day” event on Sunday, March 15, 2009. The event will take place at Club Giraud, located on 707 N. St. Mary's St., at 5:00 p.m.

3/11: Mayor partners with local organizations and families to kick-off Cribs to College, an innovative college savings pilot program

Mayor Phil Hardberger, together with the United Way of San Antonio, Bexar County, the San Antonio Children’s Museum, Citibank and the City of San Antonio’s Department of Community Initiatives, celebrated the launch of an innovative new program to create college savings accounts for babies at the Children’s Museum Tuesday.


3/10: Northeast Celebrates Ground Breaking of New YMCA Facility and Naming of Gym after City Councilwoman Sheila McNeil

To celebrate the newest recreational facility in the northeast area of the city, the Office of District 2 City Councilwoman Sheila McNeil and the YMCA of San Antonio hosted a ground breaking ceremony this morning, with the YMCA surprising Councilwoman McNeil by unveiling the name of their new gym as the Sheila McNeil Gym. The new facility will be located on Walzem Road in the former Albertson’s store building.

City Councilman John G. Clamp is proposing a way to minimize the costly fuel adjustment charge in order to lower CPS energy bills.

2/24: Councilman John Clamp to host public meeting to discuss the honorary name addition of TAPS Memorial Blvd. to Harry Wurzbach

On Thursday, February 26, at 6:00 p.m., a public hearing will be held at Northwood Presbyterian Church, 518 Pike Place, to discuss the proposed honorary name addition of TAPS Memorial Blvd to Harry Wurzbach.


2/24: Loop 1604 - US 281 Interchange Remediation Plan

Councilwoman Diane G. Cibrian made a motion to leverage money in order to provide real solutions for the extreme traffic congestion at the US 281 and Loop 1604 interchange. The proposed remediation plan includes four non-tolled lane connection options and the completion of a super street.

2/12: Councilwoman Lourdes Galvan named Honorary Chair for the Change from your Heart Benefit Gala

Healthy Families San Antonio (HFSA), an affiliate of Prevent Child Abuse America, will honor Embassy Church at its Change from your Heart Benefit Gala on February 14, at the historic Pearl Stable. Councilwoman Galvan was named honorary chair for the event.

1/30: Councilwoman McNeil gets $5.5 Million for BRAC Implementation Activities

After identifying approximately $30 million in remaining balances from previously funded projects going back 25 years, the City Council through the leadership of Councilwoman Sheila McNeil has allocated $5.5 million to fund BRAC related projects near Fort Sam Houston.

1/16: Mayor Hardberger announces an additional $30 million in funding for City projects

Mayor Phil Hardberger and City Councilmembers Friday announced that the City Manager has identified approximately $30 million in remaining balances from previously funded projects going back 25 years that can now be used for needed capital improvements in the community. City staff identified the funds from prior capital programs after a three year effort to aggressively complete and close-out bond and capital projects from 1994, 1999, and 2003 and through the strengthening the City’s financial management.
