![]() Release Date: April 9, 2010 Office of District 5 Councilman David Medina, Jr.: 207-7043 District 5 brings comprehensive services to seniors with new center Councilman David Medina, Jr. led officials and a celebratory crowd of senior residents in opening the doors for the City's new District 5 multi-service senior center. The 10,800 square foot facility, located at 2701 S. Presa St., will provide noon meals and a host of health and wellness services and activities to local seniors age 60 and older throughout the year. "Our senior residents represent a generation of true San Antonio pride in the contributions, values, and legacies which they have protected and passed down throughout the community," Medina said. "This center offers each of them a safe, convenient space where they can receive a free nutritious meal, focus on health, access basic assistance and build friendships all at the same time." "This center will offer great value to our seniors in their golden years. It is an important investment for our city," Mayor Julian Castro said. The center will be opened Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Seniors can take advantage of medical and dental screening services provided on-site by WellMed, along with fitness activities sponsored by Family Service Association, YMCA and YWCA. In addition to noon meals and health education, the Department of Community Initiatives will offer basic computer classes to seniors at the center's newcomputer lab, and case management for emergency/resource assistance. AARP will provide on-site assistance to seniors interested in seeking employment or job training. Arts and crafts and recreational activities will also be featured at the center. The District 5 center is the fourth multi-service senior center to be established by the City of San Antonio since 2007. City Council has already approved funding for two additional multi-service centers in Districts 2 and 6. Both are currently scheduled to open in October of this year.
