![]() Release Date: March 3, 2010 Office of Mayor Julián Castro: 207-7083 World Economic Forum names Castro Young Global Leader -San Antonio mayor one of 197 leaders selected worldwide- Joining executives from nonprofits and companies around the globe like Google and Twitter, Mayor Julian Castro was named Wednesday to the World Economic Forum's list of Young Global Leaders 2010. The 197 honorees from 72 countries were selected from a pool of nearly 5,000 candidates, according to an announcement from the Forum's headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. "This is a humbling honor," said Castro, the only honoree from Texas. "Together with the fine people on this list, I look forward to not only talking about our shared challenges, but our potential opportunities in the global marketplace of ideas, policies and best practices." Each year, the Forum recognizes up to 200 people under the age of 40 for "their professional accomplishments, commitment to society and potential to contribute to shaping the future of the world," according a news release available at www.weforum.org. Other Young Global Leaders for 2010 include Mandla Mandela, member of the Parliament of the South African National Congress; Evan Williams, co-founder and CEO of Twitter' Marissa Mayer, vice president of Google Inc.; and Michelle Rhee, chancellor of the District of Columbia Public Schools system. Past recipients include Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the co-founders of Google; Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Facebook; and CNN television journalist Anderson Cooper.The 2010 honorees will become part of the larger Young Global Leaders community, which currently numbers 660. They participate in various events designed to "build a strong and diverse community, to engender a better understanding of the global and regional agendas and to engage in initiatives to address specific challenges of public interest," according to the Forum.
