Councilwoman Ramos Invites Southside Community to Get Fit

On Saturday, July 2, District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos will kickoff "Get Fit Southside SATX," a new health initiative launched on the city's South Side to help motivate the community to get fit. The event is at Southside Lions Park at 9:30 a.m. near the corner of Hiawatha and Meadowlark. It will be the first of a series of free monthly fitness events that Councilwoman Ramos will be hosting throughout the remainder of the year.

Each month will showcase a different location in District 3, and several themes will be presented to encourage active participation. The Councilwoman wants to challenge South Side residents, including herself, in making a positive healthy lifestyle change. Former Councilwoman Debra Guerrero also will participate at Saturday's events. This initiative is a spinoff of the Mayor's Fitness in the Park program that was part of the Mayor's Fitness Council.

This initiative offers residents a way to combat the alarming increase of obesity and diabetes in Bexar County and the South Side's predominantly Latino community. As recently as 2008, the Centers for Disease Control reported that more than two out of three adults in Bexar County were overweight or obese. Staying active and encouraging non-sedentary habits are essential in curbing this concerning trend. Families and participants of all ages are welcome to attend Saturday's kickoff event.

Fruit, water, and other healthy snacks will be available in addition to a free Get Fit SATX workout. For more information, call (210) 207-0969 or visit www.getfitsatx.com.
