Release Date: November 7, 2011 Office of District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos: 207-7064 Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos introduces new playground at Mendoza Park in honor of fallen soldier On Nov. 5, 2011, District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos welcomed the community to a ribbon cutting of a brand new KaBOOM! playground at Sgt. Matthew E. Mendoza Park, 5206 Hillje St. The construction of the playground was made possible by a partnership between Foresters Insurance, KaBOOM!, the Salado Creek Foundation, and the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department. Volunteers participated in an all-day build on-site to construct the playground. The process of making this playground is quite unique as students from nearby Forbes Elementary and the family of the late Sgt. Mendoza helped select the design elements of this new playground. Mendoza Park was dedicated in March of this year in honor of Sgt. Mendoza, of the United States Marine Corps, who died in 2008 during combat operations in Afghanistan at the age of 24. The playground will provide a welcoming environment for the area neighborhood children to play in and honor the memory of Sgt. Mendoza, a lifelong District 3 resident. Councilwoman Ramos publicly thanked the Mendoza family, volunteers, and the community partners for their support and dedication to enhancing the quality of life of this community.
