Senior Center Opens in District 6
City Councilman Ray Lopez joined San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro, WellMed
Charitable Foundation Co-Founder Richard Manning, and invited guests to
officially open the doors to the new co-operated Alicia Treviño Lopez Senior
One Stop Center serving the District 6 senior community on Tuesday, July 5.
"It is with profound enthusiasm and pride that the City has dedicated a
comprehensive, innovative space designed to serve the needs of our District
6 seniors," Councilman Lopez said. "The spirit of my mother Alicia was
always filled with strength and joy throughout her golden years. This
multi-service center promises to cultivate that same spirit in our senior
residents as it seeks to improve their quality of life in the years ahead."
Manning said the staff at the WellMed Charitable Foundation, which is
partnering with the City of San Antonio to operate the center, is also proud
of their role in establishing this unique senior center. He relayed a
message from WellMed Charitable Foundation Chairman Dr. George Rapier III.
"At WellMed, we have been focused on caring for seniors for more than two
decades. We take great pride in helping to create and operate the new Alicia
Treviño Lopez Senior One Stop Center as it is a fitting extension of that
mission," Dr. Rapier said. "We have designed a space that is all about your
health – social, emotional and physical health. We hope you consider it your
home away from home, and that you will take advantage of the many
complimentary amenities, services and programs offered here for years to
come. From your friends at WellMed, we want to say welcome!"
The 22,000 square foot facility is located at 8353 Culebra Rd. inside the
Culebra Crossing Shopping Center and offers a host of services and amenities
during the week coordinated by the City of San Antonio and WellMed
Charitable Foundation. These include nutritious mid-day meals, exercise and
fitness stations, games and activities, case management assistance, basic
health screenings, caregiver support, computer literacy instruction, and
much more. The center is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Registration is free and open to all senior residents ages 60 and older.
Transportation for senior residents to the center may be provided within a
5-mile driving distance. Seniors also have the option of riding the bus (VIA
Line #618) or driving themselves (ample parking is available). The center is
the sixth multi-service senior center to be sponsored by the City.
