Sheryl Sculley to continue highly successful run as City Manager at least through 2013
Council poised to approve two-year contract extension on Dec. 15

Calling her the "best City Manager in America," Mayor Julián Castro announced Wednesday that City Council has reached an agreement in principle to extend Sheryl Sculley's contract through Dec. 31, 2013.

"In six short years, Sheryl has put San Antonio on the map for fiscal discipline, professionalism and long-range planning for the city organization," Castro said. "San Antonians have truly been the beneficiaries of her hard work and talents."

Sculley's contract extension, which was set to expire at the end of 2011, is expected to be formally approved at the Dec. 15 meeting of City Council. Under the terms of the extension, the City Manager's annual salary will remain at $355,000, and she will receive $10,000 annually to cover additional voluntary benefits including, but not limited to, supplemental life insurance, disability insurance and long term care insurance.

Through Sculley's leadership, the City of San Antonio has set itself apart on the national stage. In addition to being the only city among the Top 10 largest cities in the United States to have a AAA bond rating with all three major rating ratings, San Antonio has weathered the economic downturn by passing a series of balanced budgets that have required no layoffs or property tax increases.

In 2007, city voters exercised renewed confidence in City Hall by overwhelmingly passing the largest capital bond program in San Antonio history. The $550 million program was managed so efficiently, it came in $50 million under budget.

In 2009, the International City Management Association, a 7,000-member professional organization, recognized Sculley with the Career Excellence in City Management Award.
