Councilman John Clamp opposes Mayor's resolution reproving Arizona Immigration Law

Mayor Julian Castro has drafted a resolution denouncing the Arizona Immigration Law and is asking the State of Texas Legislature not to enact any similar legislation. On Thursday, June 24, the San Antonio City Council will consider the resolution. Councilman John Clamp, District 10, opposes the resolution and believes that the City of San Antonio should not take a position on this issue.

Under SB 1070, the law enforcement officers of Arizona can only inquire during a valid traffic stop or in the course of an investigation with probable cause and cannot solely consider race, color or national origin. The Arizona law also states that if you are a U.S. citizen you need local, state or federally issued identification, such as a driver's license. If you are a naturalized citizen, you need your green card or proof of citizenship. All of the above are currently required by law.

"The State of Arizona has every right to protect their citizens by any means necessary," said Councilman Clamp. "The City of San Antonio should be concerned with our economy, unemployment, the city budget and public safety for our city. I do not support a boycott, resolution or any admonishment of the State of Arizona. Frankly, I do not feel that we should waste our time or taxpayer dollars even discussing this issue."
