Release Date: December 14, 2011 City of San Antonio Communications Office: 207-7234 More than 1,700 People Voted in Mayor's Downtown Holiday Contest - Winners Announced Befitting Mayor Julián Castro's goal to turn downtown San Antonio into a vibrant, 24-7 hub of activity, the Light Up Downtown Holiday Contest that kicked off last month attracted more than 30 downtown properties to participate in the inaugural competition, and more than 1,700 people cast their votes to determine the best and brightest holiday light displays for storefronts and buildings. The winners are as follows: People's Choice Award Best Lighting Display of a Building - Marriott Rivercenter; People's Choice Award Best Lighting Display of a Storefront - San Antonio Children's Museum; Critic's Choice Award Best Lighting Display of a Building - Vidorra Condominium; Critic's Choice Award Best Lighting Display of a Storefront - Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce; Hospitality Award Best Lighting Display of a Hotel - Hilton Palacio del Rio Hotel; and CPS Energy Award Greenest Lighting Display - Riverwalk Plaza Hotel and Suites. "We invite everyone to come downtown and view all the lighting displays along Houston Street from the Alamo to Market Square and throughout downtown to HemisFair Park that were a part of the inaugural contest," said Mayor Castro. The contest promotes the use of energy-efficient LED lights which can help reduce energy costs. Downtown businesses were encouraged to participate in the competition.
