Annual Housing Summit Goes “Back to Basics”
Sixth annual summit addresses new commitment to housing and community development

The City is going back to the basics as it moves this community forward towards a new commitment to housing and community development. “Back to Basics – A New Commitment to Housing Development, Housing Rehabilitation and Community Revitalization” is the theme for the Sixth Annual Housing Summit. The three-day event, coordinated by the City’s Grants Monitoring and Administration Department, is scheduled from September 19 to September 21 at the Hilton San Antonio Airport, 611 NW Loop 410.

Panel discussions, presentations, and workshops are some of the elements of the regional summit, which will bring together city, county and state leaders, policy makers, housing developers, financial lenders, affordable housing providers, community development organizations, homebuyers and members of the public. Panel participants include topic experts from other states who will provide a new approach to community development.

Summit topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

 Low/No-Cost Green Building Techniques & LEED for Homes
 Keeping the Dream: Developing Effective Post-Purchase Counseling
 If You Build It, They Will Come: Housing Success Stories and a Look at the New Urbanism
 Housing Needs from a Grassroots Community Perspective
 Manufactured Housing in Urban America
 Transit Oriented Housing
 The “Low Down” on Down Payment
 Challenges of Downtown Housing
 Innovations in Housing Construction: Housing Design and Development

Another highlight of the summit will be the presentation of the City’s Community Development Strategic Plan on Wednesday, September 19. The presentation will provide citizens the opportunity to see and hear how their comments were incorporated
into a strategic vision and provide feedback as to whether the plan is consistent with
their intended outcomes. Within its three-year “rolling” time span, the plan proposes a coordinated sequence of investments to address all elements of the living and built environment that constitute a sustainable community.

Interested citizens, community development organizations, neighborhood associations and homeowner associations are urged to register for the Housing Summit by September 10. Registration includes keynote luncheons. Registration forms and an agenda for the summit are available at www.sanantonio.gov/hcd.
