San Antonio to Celebrate Older Americans Month
May 2 proclamation and May 18 Jamaica will recognize local seniors

Seniors and their contributions to our community will be celebrated as the City of San Antonio recognizes Older Americans Month in May. The Department of Community Initiatives’ Senior Services Division is spearheading two separate events to honor seniors.

On Wednesday, May 2 at 10:00 a.m., Mayor Pro-Tem Delicia Herrera will issue a proclamation in the City Council Chamber to pay tribute to older residents and the value they bring to society. She will be one of many local, state and national officials recognizing the theme for this year’s celebration – Older Americans: Making Choices for a Healthier Future. A reception for seniors will take place following the ceremony, which also will highlight Elder Abuse Prevention Month and Ombudsman Appreciation Week.

Later in the month, participants of the City-sponsored senior nutrition centers will party and dance as they host the annual Jamaica (ha-my-ka) scheduled for Friday, May 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Rosedale Park, 303 Dartmouth. More than 1,000 seniors are expected at the festival, which is open to the public. Handmade arts and crafts and a variety of food items will be sold as part of this major fundraiser. Jamaica proceeds help seniors in emergency situations; assist in paying for trips; and fund arts and crafts along with other activities. A requested donation of $1 pays for admission.
