Community invited to attend first planning meeting for 2010 MLK March and Commemoration Program

Planning and event preparation are beginning for the 2010 MLK March and Commemorative Program. The first MLK Commission meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 31, at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall Media Briefing Room, 100 Military Plaza.

This year’s MLK Commission chair is Reverend Otis I. Mitchell, Pastor, Mount Zion First Baptist Church. Prior to becoming the pastor of Mount Zion, Mitchell served as a Chaplin in the United States Army for more than 25 years. Reverend Mitchell has been recreating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s sermons and speaking about Dr. King’s life and influence since 1975. He even had the opportunity to present his recreation before the King family in Atlanta, Georgia.

People of all races and ages, from teenagers through senior citizens, are encouraged to attend the meeting and get involved with the efforts to pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. January 18, 2010, will mark the 23rd anniversary of the City of San Antonio’s legacy of joining with community members to honor Dr. King, one of this nation’s most revered civil rights leaders. The City’s MLK Commission leads the community-wide MLK March and Commemoration, which includes various events across the city.
