Community invited to
attend first planning meeting for 2010 MLK March and Commemoration
Program
Planning and event preparation are beginning for the 2010 MLK March
and Commemorative Program. The first MLK Commission meeting is scheduled
for Monday, August 31, at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall Media Briefing
Room, 100 Military Plaza.
This year’s MLK Commission chair is Reverend Otis I. Mitchell, Pastor,
Mount Zion First Baptist Church. Prior to becoming the pastor of Mount
Zion, Mitchell served as a Chaplin in the United States Army for more
than 25 years. Reverend Mitchell has been recreating Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr.’s sermons and speaking about Dr. King’s life and influence
since 1975. He even had the opportunity to present his recreation before
the King family in Atlanta, Georgia.
People of all races and ages, from teenagers through senior citizens,
are encouraged to attend the meeting and get involved with the efforts
to pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. January 18, 2010, will mark
the 23rd anniversary of the City of San Antonio’s legacy of joining with
community members to honor Dr. King, one of this nation’s most revered
civil rights leaders. The City’s MLK Commission leads the community-wide
MLK March and Commemoration, which includes various events across the
city.
