City announces first Diwali Festival
of Lights
The City of San Antonio's International
Affairs Department and the India Association of San Antonio (IASA) today
announced plans for the first city-wide celebration of Diwali: Festival
of Lights. The inaugural celebration comes complete with Indian dance,
food and a special lighting ceremony at the Arneson River Theater and
rounds out with a spectacular fireworks display over HemisFair Park. The
free event is scheduled for Sunday, November 1 from 6:00 p.m. to
8:00 p.m.
The event marks the first time the City has partnered with the IASA to
showcase the Indian culture. Since signing a Sister City Agreement with
Chennai, India last year, the City has committed to strengthening its
relationship with the Indian community living in the area.
"San Antonio is known for its many festivities and warm hospitality,"
said Beth Costello, director of the International Affairs Department.
"This new event will introduce the cultural traditions of India to the
greater community and celebrate San Antonio's thriving Indian-American
culture" she added.
Diwali (also known as Deepavali) is a significant festival celebrated in
India and recognizes the victory of good over evil. Fireworks and
diyas (candles) are central to the cultural tradition. At the San
Antonio celebration, hundreds of tea lights will be released into the
San Antonio River.
"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate Diwali, India's
largest and most festive holiday, with our friends in San Antonio," said
Kausi Subramaniam,executive committee member, India Association of San
Antonio and chairperson of the San Antonio-Chennai Sister City Task
Force. "We hope that Diwali in San Antonio will become one of San
Antonio's cherished annual festivals," she added.
The event is free. Indian Cuisine will be available for purchase. The
fireworks display starts at 7:45 p.m. with the event ending at 8:00 p.m. For
