City to host last
Household Hazardous Waste event of 2009
The City's Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) will be hosting
the final mobile Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event of
2009 on Saturday, December 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00
p.m. at the Southeast Service Center, 7402 S. New Braunfels.
Residents looking for a safe way to dispose of household items such as
paint, motor oil, antifreeze, pool chemicals, batteries, pesticides,
aerosol cans and florescent light bulbs are encouraged to bring those
items to the HHW event.
Most household material labeled "toxic," "corrosive" or "flammable" can
be brought to the HHW event. Materials should be kept in their original
containers. If containers are deteriorated or leaking, transfer
materials to a safe container and label the new container to correctly
identify the contents.
As part of a pilot program between the San Antonio Water System (SAWS)
and the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), residents are invited to
bring their unused and expired prescribed medications to the event to
safely dispose of them. The goal of this program is to lower the number
of incidents of prescription drug abuse as well as help eliminate
contamination of the water system.
San Antonio residents who are customers of the Solid Waste Management
Department may take part in the HHW portion of the event with a picture
ID and current CPS Energy bill showing Environmental Fee as proof of
residency.
At this event the following items will not
be accepted: explosives, ammunition, fireworks, medical waste,
industrial/commercial waste, radioactive materials, electronics, tires
and large quantities of materials.
