Summer Recycling Tips -
Tip #1: Save a bag…Don’t trash grass
Summer has arrived in San Antonio, which means it’s time for pool
parties, picnics, the smell of fresh cut grass and overall fun in the
Texas sun. While enjoying the great weather and overall freedom that
summer has to offer, the City's Solid Waste Management Department would
like to offer residents some helpful seasonal recycling tips for
consideration.
Tip #1: Save a bag…Don’t trash grass. Mowing the lawn is a big
summer chore. But did you know that if you practiced grasscycling, the
act of leaving grass clippings on the lawn, you could save time and
reduce the need for fertilizer.
Proper mowing is the key to grasscycling. The basic rule is to not cut
more than one-third of the length of the grass blade at one time. Grass
should be dry and the mower blades sharp. In the summer, which is a
slower growing season, you should only need to cut your lawn every seven
to 14 days.
Grass clippings are a large portion of the waste stream so grasscycling
will help reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill. When
properly clipped, grass clippings decompose quickly and release
nutrients back into the soil. This will help you have a healthier
looking lawn.
