Christmas tree recycling program starts this weekend

Starting this weekend, January 8 and 9 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. San Antonio residents are asked to take part in a holiday "tree-dition" by recycling their fresh cut Christmas trees at one of the 21 drop-off locations across the city.

Residents who are unable to attend this weekend may also recycle their Christmas tree next weekend, January 15 and 16 or through the end of the month at the Bitters Brush Recycling Center, 1800 Bitters Road, during regular business hours.

Below are guidelines to help residents prepare their Christmas tree for recycling:

  • Strip off all decorations, nails and stands.
  • Trees longer than six feet should be cut in half.
  • Do not wrap tree in plastic.
  • Flocked trees will be accepted.

All trees collected will be shredded into pine mulch which will be available on site on a first come, first serve basis. Residents will also be asked to load their own mulch.

For more information on Christmas tree recycling call 3-1-1 or visit www.sanantonio.gov/swmd.
