City of San Antonio Communications Office: 207-7234
City participates in
National Super Saturday-Economic Stimulus Day
Seniors, low income residents urged to visit
free tax preparation sites this Saturday
Seniors, low income residents and disabled veterans are encouraged to file
their 2007 tax return for free at any Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
(VITA) site on Saturday, March 29 as the City participates in the
IRS-sponsored National Super Saturday – Economic Stimulus Day.
The Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 provides for economic stimulus payments
of up to $600 ($1,200 for filing a joint return) plus $300 for each child
qualifying for the Child Tax Credit. To receive a tax rebate, qualifying
individuals must file a 2007 tax return.
Individuals who are not normally required to file a tax return, including
those who receive at least $3,000 in earned income, Social Security
benefits, and/or veteran’s benefits are eligible for the stimulus
payments, but they must file a 2007 tax return.
These individuals may receive a payment of $300 ($600 if married filing
jointly). The City is encouraging retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage
workers who are usually exempt from filing a tax return to do so on March
29 in order to receive a stimulus payment.
The IRS will use the 2007 tax return to determine eligibility and
calculate the amount of the economic stimulus payment. Individuals
receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments and those who have
less than $3,000 of qualifying income will not be eligible for a stimulus
payment.
