Five more
days to historic Main Plaza opens
The opening of Main Plaza – The Heart of the City is just five
days away. On Sunday, April 13, the city known for its grand celebrations
will once again put on its party hat as it celebrates the historic
transformation of one of downtown’s greatest treasures.
Festivities will kick off with a mariachi mass celebrated by Archbishop
José H. Gomez at San Fernando Cathedral at 5:00 p.m. The community will
then be invited to enjoy the new Main Plaza grounds with activities
ranging from live musical entertainment to children’s activities. At 7:30
p.m., the public will gather for a special ceremony celebrating the
plaza’s past, present and future. At 8:30 p.m. the night becomes magical
as Mayor Phil Hardberger flips a switch to light the new Tobin fountains.
The lighting of the fountains will be accompanied by a musical serenade
from the San Antonio Symphony. Musical entertainment and festivities will
continue until 9:45 p.m.
Established in 1731 as the Villa de San Fernando by Spanish settlers of
the Canary Islands, Main Plaza has always been at the center of San
Antonio’s municipal government but now it will also be the center of
attraction for concerts, art shows, and other eclectic events.
Come out and enjoy the Opening Day Celebration of Main Plaza, the night
promises to be a celebration for the entire family. Opening day
festivities are free and open to the public. Food concessions will be
available. For more information, visit www.sanantonio.gov/mainplaza.
