City seeking volunteers to plant trees

The City of San Antonio is looking for volunteers to assist them in planting over 100 trees. From 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 1 volunteers will plant trees at various VIA bus stops across the city.

The volunteers, who will be assisted by trained gardening professionals, will dig holes, plant trees, and assist with mulching and watering. Tools will be provided by the City’s Park and Recreation’s tool lending program; however, any volunteer who has a favorite gardening tool is invited to bring
his/her own.

This event is part of the Citywide Street Tree Planting Initiative and the Parks Tree Planting Program that supports the City’s goals of tree preservation and enhancement. Last month, City Council approved this pilot program to initiate street tree plantings in public rights-of-way to include installation and an initial maintenance period. The initiative will plant 400 large trees along highly developed corridors to clean the air, provide cooler temperatures, reduce the mowing footprint, decrease stormwater and pollutants, and beautify public streets.

Individuals interested in helping to make San Antonio green, contact Brian Hansen at 833-4475 for more information.
