Voelcker Park Event to
feature birding tour
Beginning and experienced birders alike are invited to enjoy a
bird walk at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, at Voelcker Park, 12000 N.W.
Military Highway, as part of an event sponsored by the San Antonio Parks
and Recreation Department. The entrance for the community event is on
N.W. Military Highway, just south of the Campus of the San Antonio
Jewish Community.
The open house will run from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with children’s
activities and informational booths, including an introduction to
birding. The Parks and Recreation Department Natural Areas staff will
share information about seasonal migration, use of binoculars and field
guides, the wide range of bird species found in Texas and sample bird
calls. Self guided tours of a portion of Voelcker Park are also
available along a 1.89 mile trail. Dogs on leashes are welcome to this
event.
The property, previously owned by Max and Minnie Voelcker, who operated
a dairy farm there, is located on either side of Wurzbach Parkway
between Military Highway and Blanco Road.
After a series of public input meetings, the master plan for the
311-acre park was
approved by City Council on May 8. The first phase of park improvements
is expected
to begin later this summer.
