Building Green topic at
this year’s Community Development Summit
The City today announced plans for the 2008 Community Development Summit,
scheduled for September 15 through September 17 at the Henry B.
Gonzalez Convention Center, located at 200 E. Market.
This year’s theme is “Lessons from the Past – Opportunities for a
Sustainable Future.” Panel discussions, presentations, tours and training
will focus on reinvestment planning, leveraging private sector investment,
and coordinating city resources.
As the 7th largest city in America continues to grow, San Antonio leaders
will focus on creating sustainable communities, a way in which to create
smaller communities by focusing on eco-friendly neighborhoods. By building
Green, creating more green space, and developing Green infrastructure that
protects natural resource systems, residents can enjoy cleaner air and
water, reduced travel time, and an overall better quality of life.
“San Antonio and other major metropolitan areas are experiencing rapid
growth. Focusing on creating smaller communities within a larger
metropolitan area brings benefits for both residents and developers.” said
Patrick Howard, assistant director of Planning and Community Development.
Creating sustainable communities is only one of the topics featured at
this year’s summit. Other tracks include coordinating City resources and
investment planning.
The City will also provide an update on progress made on the draft
Strategic Plan for Community Development and host several work sessions
that will provide summit attendees opportunities to discuss and comment on
the Strategic Plan. Presenters include local and out-of-state panelists
who will discuss current progress as well as new approaches to community
development.
Pre-registration is available, although registration will be taken through
September 16. Full registration is $100; daily registration is $50. Call
