2009 Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice set for March 28

The 13th annual Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice is set for Saturday, March 28. The march and several upcoming events will commemorate the legacy of civil rights and labor leader Cesar E. Chavez.

The March begins with an assembly and program at 11:00 a.m. at Avenida Guadalupe, located on 1321 El Paso. At 1:00 p.m., participants will begin a two-mile trek to Alamo Plaza for the program. The grand marshal of this year’s march is Arturo Rodriguez, president of the United Farm Workers.

A number of events, coordinated by the Cesar E. Chavez Legacy and Educational Fund, are scheduled to begin on March 19, including:
• March 19: City Council Proclamation, 5:15 p.m., City Council Chambers
• March 22: Student Art Presentation, 6:00 p.m., Institute of Texan Cultures
• March 25: Remembering Cesar E. Chavez Film Festival, 6:00 p.m., Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center
• March 27: Scholarship Recipients Dinner Awards, 6:30 p.m., La Villita Assembly Hall

The San Antonio Public Library is also offering a variety of events celebrating the life of Chavez.

Chavez founded the National Farm Works Association in 1962 and served as a community servant and crusader for non-violent social change for thousands of Americans who suffered greatly and had no voice. For a complete list of events, visit www.sanantonio.gov/chavezmarch.
