San Antonio Bike Share System selected for International Downtown Association Merit Award

During its upcoming annual conference, the International Downtown Association will recognize the City of San Antonio Office of Environmental Policy with a Downtown Merit Award for its work and initiatives related to San Antonio Bike Share System.

"The bike share system is the first of its kind in Texas, and addresses two of our City's top priorities: getting in shape and promoting sustainability," said Mayor Julián Castro.

Doing business as San Antonio B-Cycle, it is a state-of-the art system with 13 stations and about 140 bicycles at key destinations downtown. It was among six qualified entries in the category of Transportation. This category illustrates projects that used innovations in transportation, access, or parking to enhance downtown and improve the users' experiences.

"The bike share system has been embraced here and adds one more choice for people to travel around downtown. Users appreciate the fact that they can see how many miles they've pedaled and how many calories they've burned. It's convenient and affordable," said City Manager Sheryl Sculley.

"The City of San Antonio Office of Environmental Policy's project received the IDA Merit Award for delivering excellence in downtown management," said David Downey, IDA President and CEO. "Each year the IDA Awards Jury recognizes organizations that utilize best practices in our industry. The San Antonio Bike Share System is a shining example of excellent downtown management that delivers real results."

The Washington, D.C.-based International Downtown Association (IDA) is a champion for vital and livable urban centers and strives to inform, influence, and inspire downtown leaders and advocates. With 550 members and thousands of friends, IDA is a guiding force in creating healthy and dynamic centers that anchor the well-being of towns, cities, and regions.

"This has been a team effort and our partners have been integral to bike share's success," said Laurence Doxsey, Director of the Office of Environmental Policy.

The City of San Antonio is a member of the International Downtown Association. The Office of Environmental Policy has partnered with Downtown Operations, San Antonio Bike Share 501(c)3 and other stakeholders for the implementation of this project.
