Nominations for 2012 Martin Luther King, Jr. awards being accepted


Time still remains for nominations to be submitted by Bexar County residents for the 2012 Baha'i Unity of Humanity Award and the Rev. Dr. R.A. Callies, Sr. Courage Award - a new award named in honor of the late founder of the San Antonio Martin Luther King, Jr. March. Deadline to submit entries for both awards is Friday, Dec. 30, 2011. Applications and information are available at www.sanantonio.gov/mlk/.

The Baha'i Unity of Humanity Award recognizes members of the community whose lives embody the legacy of Dr. King. The Rev. Dr. R.A. Callies, Sr. Courage Award recognizes an individual, organization or group whose record exhibits the courage of the Rev. Dr. R.A. Callies, Sr. to advance the principles of nonviolence and represent the values and human equalities of Dr. King.

The 2012 Martin Luther King, Jr. Distinguished Achievement Award was presented to Aaronetta Pierce, founding chairperson of the local Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, at a special ceremony held on Oct. 19, 2011.

The awards will be announced and presented by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Committee on Monday, January 16, 2012.
