Release Date: July 28, 2011 City of San Antonio Communications Office: 207-7234 City of San Antonio Archaeologist receives prestigious state award -Texas Historical Commission recognizes excellence in and dedication to archaeology- Kay Hindes, City Archaeologist for the City of the San Antonio, was honored today by the Archaeology Division of the Texas Historical Commission (THC) with the "Award of Merit in Archaeology" in the category of archaeological preservation. Hindes, who has worked as the City's Archaeologist for 8 years, was presented the award at the THC's Archaeology Committee meeting in Austin. Hindes received the award for her "dedication, expertise and ethics" and for her work in "ensuring excellent quality field investigations, data analysis and public outreach associated with the City of San Antonio's preservation ordinance," as stated in a letter to Hindes by Mark Wolfe, THC Executive Director. "We at the City are extremely proud of Kay's dedication and professionalism. With her expertise and experience, Kay brings a great deal of value to City projects. San Antonio is a city with a vast array of cultural resources that have been protected and enhanced as a direct result of Kay’s work," said Shanon Peterson, Historic Preservation Officer. "Kay has overseen cultural resource compliance for a number of important City projects such as the Brackenridge Park and Golf Course and the San Antonio River Extensions." Hindes, who works in the City's Office of Historic Preservation, received her B.A. in anthropology from the University of Texas at Austin and is a specialist in Spanish Colonial mission archeology and archival research. She is the author of The Rediscovery of Santa Cruz of San Saba, A Mission for the Apache in Spanish Texas.
