Market Square celebrates 25th annual Blessing of the Animals

Event honors animals present at the first nativity

In honor of the animals present at the first nativity, all animals, including dogs, cats, horses, llamas, donkeys, snakes, parrots and other furry, feathered or even scaly pets, are invited to be presented at the 25th annual Blessing of the Animals on Saturday, Dec. 10 from noon to 6 p.m. at downtown's historic Market Square. The event is free and open to the public.

At 1 p.m. a small mariachi procession will bring in a Catholic priest who will offer a prayer and special blessing for each pet. After the ceremony, attendees can visit the petting zoo of exotic animals and enjoy food and craft booths and performances by local Ballet Folklorico dance groups.

Individuals looking to adopt a pet might find one at the "Take Me Home for the Holidays" pet adoption program, sponsored by the Animal Defense League of Texas. Pets will be available for adoption at Market Square from noon to 5 p.m. In addition, Groovy Dog Bakery and Boutique from Austin, Texas, will be on site with holiday gifts and treats that are ideal for your pet's Christmas stocking.

Market Square provides a complete shopping, dining and entertainment experience. The festive setting features more than 100 shops and celebrated restaurants and is open every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by the City of San Antonio's Downtown Operations Department.
