Release Date: August 31, 2011 City of San Antonio Communications Office: 207-7234 Mayor Julián Castro Proclaims September as "Climate Change Awareness Month" -Supports 350SanAntonio.org's efforts to promote moving beyond fossil fuels- Mayor Julián Castro proclaimed September 2011 as "Climate Change Awareness Month" in San Antonio at a news conference held on the steps of City Hall today. He thanked Ms. Mobi Warren, a fifth-grade science teacher in San Antonio, for organizing several informative events in September to help raise climate change awareness in the community. Warren leads 350sanantonio.org, a diverse coalition of individuals and organizations working on solutions to climate change and is a local affiliate of 350.org. "The City of San Antonio understands the importance of balancing the need to meet increasing energy demands with good environmental stewardship," Castro said. "To make the most impact, all of us must share in the responsibility to adopt sustainable practices to preserve natural resources and protect our environment." 350SanAntonio.org is a local affiliate of 350.org, the international grassroots campaign working on solutions to the climate change crisis. Locally, 350SanAntonio.org is a diverse coalition of individuals and organizations working on raising public awareness of global climate change by sponsoring and supporting public events during the month of September. Events include a free public showing of the film Carbon Nation and Moving Planet: A Day to Move Beyond Fossil Fuels, and an educational fair at Pearl on September 24. A special focus of the month will be on transportation choices that reduce or eliminate fossil fuels. |
