Free event offers resources, information on caring for historic homes

Historic home enthusiasts are encouraged to attend the 3rd annual Historic Homeowner Fair scheduled for Saturday, August 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave, in the Monticello Park Historic District. This free event provides information and resources on improving historic properties and enjoying the benefits of living in a historic house.

Hosted by the City's Office of Historic Preservation, the fair brings homeowners together with preservation experts, knowledgeable tradesmen, and several City departments to discuss how to care for and maintain historic homes.

Professionals specializing in historic homes will host a variety of presentations throughout the day, and the Exhibitors Hall will feature products and services of interest to owners of older homes including demonstrations of window restoration. Two special "Ask the Expert" booths will be available to answer historic research and project design questions.

Educational session topics include: sustainability and older homes, landscaping for historic properties, tax incentives and financial assistance available to historic property owners, San Antonio’s architectural history, making appropriate repairs and additions to older properties, and much more.

Drawings for door prizes will be held during the midday plenary session where the Historic Preservation Officer, District 1 Councilman Diego Bernal, and District 7 Councilman Cris Medina will discuss the importance of historic preservation. The grand prize is a "staycation" package including a two-night stay at a Riverwalk hotel and passes to downtown attractions.

This free, family-friendly event includes fun activities for school-age children. The first 500 attendees will receive a free reusable tote. For more information, visit http://www.sanantonio.gov/Historic/ or call 215-9274.
