Release Date: September 6, 2011 City of San Antonio Communications Office: 207-7234 Downtown Holiday lights in the summer? -Mayor announces holiday lighting contest- Although the dog days of summer are an unusual time to talk about holiday decorations, Mayor Julián Castro, Councilman Diego Bernal and City Manager Sheryl Sculley got into the festive spirit and today announced the inaugural Light Up Downtown Holiday Contest as the Municipal Plaza Building lit up the downtown skyline. All downtown business owners are encouraged to participate in the program and compete for the most decorative and creative use of LED lights this upcoming holiday season. The contest aims to encourage the use of energy efficient LED lights, which can help reduce energy costs. Mayor Castro also hopes this initiative will give tourists and locals another reason to visit Downtown this winter. "Each year we ring in the holidays with the annual lighting of the Christmas tree, the Holiday River Parade and we light up the Riverwalk. This season, we’re hoping to bring visitors to the street level to enjoy creative displays of lights with their families," Mayor Castro said. The contest is open to all downtown businesses. Participants will showcase the exteriors of their buildings with creative holiday lighting displays and compete in a variety of categories, including "Best Lighting Display of a Historic Building," "People’s Choice Award," and "Most Creative Lighting Display." Winners will be recognized at the Celebrate San Antonio New Year's Eve event. The program is sponsored by CPS Energy. To participate, call 207-5866. The Light Up Downtown Holiday Contest begins November 25, 2011. |
