City celebrates San Antonio's Treasures during National Preservation Month

Join the City's Office of Historic Preservation in celebrating the month of May as National Preservation Month. Not only can you take this month to relish in the rich cultural heritage of our city, but you can also use this time to recognize, discuss, and celebrate the aesthetic, environmental and economic value historic preservation brings to San Antonio.

This year's theme, Celebrating San Antonio's Treasures, focuses on the city's collection of treasures that are more than the obvious landmark properties. "Our treasures are also individual houses and historic neighborhoods that create an inviting place to call home. They are commercial corridors that remind us of life before the shopping mall," said Shanon Peterson Wasielewski, Historic Preservation Officer. "San Antonio is full of wonderful, unique places. National Preservation Month gives us the opportunity to celebrate those places and educate the public on why they matter," she added.

The Office of Historic Preservation will kick-off the month-long celebration today with the "State of Historic Preservation" presentation given by Wasielewski, with comments from Mayor Julián Castro, City Manager Sheryl Sculley and City Council members, at the Spanish Governor's Palace courtyard.

A number of activities are also planned throughout the month, including guided running/walking tours on May 8, and May 26, continuation of the Westside Cultural Resource Survey, and the This Place Matters photo contest.

On May 21, the popular Amazing Preservation Race for Kids through the King William Historic District makes a comeback. This free event gives school-aged children an opportunity to learn about history, architecture and preservation.

This year, adults age 18 and older get an opportunity to go on their own Downtown adventure with the Amazing Preservation Race for Adults. Scheduled for May 13, this architectural scavenger hunt tests trivia skills as teams of four take on urban challenges and compete for a grand prize. Costumes are encouraged and the cost to participate is $80 per team.
