Family event set at the Spanish Governor's Palace in honor of National Preservation Month

Celebrate National Preservation Month by attending Preserving Our History, a Family Fun Day on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at the Spanish Governor's Palace, located at 105 Military Plaza. The event is included with the price of admission to the museum and will offer educational activities geared towards children of all ages.

The theme for this year's National Preservation Month is Celebrating America’s Treasures. As a San Antonio treasure, the Spanish Governor's Palace will commemorate this month by providing fun activities such as a butter churning station, arts and crafts and many more activities which will educate the public about daily life in the 1700s while also promoting the importance of San Antonio’s earliest history.

Built in 1722, the Spanish Governor's Palace was a part of the original Presidio San Antonio de Bejar, the first Spanish military presence in San Antonio. This historic site served as the Captain’s residence. Throughout the years, the building has been home to various Captains and their families and also housed commercial businesses, such as a tin shop, pawn shop and a saloon to name a few. Recognizing its historic importance, the City acquired the building in 1929. After the restoration of the building by architect Harvey P. Smith, the museum opened to the public in 1930.
Named "the most beautiful building in San Antonio" by the National Geographic Society, the Spanish Governor's Palace is truly a national and local treasure.
