Release Date: November 23, 2011 City of San Antonio Communications Office: 207-7234 La Feria de Santa Cecilia celebrates patroness of music On Saturday, November 26 from noon to 7 p.m. and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 27, local bands and Mariachi groups will gather and celebrate La Feria de Santa Cecilia: El Dia del Musico, or Festival of St. Cecilia: Day of the Musician, at Historic Market Square in downtown San Antonio. The event is free and open to the public. The two-day event is traditionally celebrated in Mexico in honor of all musicians. St. Cecilia was a second-century Roman noblewoman who was martyred for her beliefs and, it is said, as she lay dying, she sang to God with her final breaths--an image that resonates deeply with musicians. Today she is widely recognized as the patron saint of musicians. On Saturday, November 26, visitors can enjoy live music all day. Highlighting the day's activities is Azul Barrientos with her band:"Azul Electrica," whose sound is heavily influenced by the fusion of mariachi, ranchera, and rock 'n roll music. On Sunday, November 27, more than 30 Mariachis will gather and stroll along the Market Square plazas serenading with traditional Mariachi music. From trios to female and male mariachi groups, visitors will enjoy the beautiful sounds of trumpets, guitars and violins. Food booths and arts and crafts vendors will also be on site. This event is organized and sponsored by the City of San Antonio's Downtown Operations Department. For more information, visit www.sanantonio.gov/marketsquare or call (210) 207-8600. |
