Volunteers needed to “Make Downtown Shine”

As San Antonio gears up for the NCAA Final Four, the City is looking for volunteers and corporate groups who want to make downtown even better for our visitor’s by helping to Make Downtown Shine.

The City’s Downtown Operations Department will hold four clean up events with the first events kicking off this Friday, February 22 at Hemisfair Park from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and Saturday, February 23 at La Villita from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Volunteers will also be needed for the next “Make Downtown Shine” clean up events on the following days:

Saturday, March 8
Houston Street and Hemisfair Park
8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Friday, March 14
Alamo Street
8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Volunteers will combine forces with downtown stakeholders and City crews to clean and restore sidewalks and storefronts. Volunteers who participate in “Make Downtown Shine” will be asked to participate in projects such as painting park benches and newspaper boxes, washing windows, sweeping and pressure-washing sidewalks, picking up litter and planting new flowers. Downtown businesses will be asked to clean and make improvements to their storefronts that coincide with the event.

“Make Downtown Shine is an opportunity for all San Antonio residents and stakeholders to make downtown sparkle in time for our Final Four guests,” said Paula Stallcup, director of the City’s Downtown Operations Department. “We invite volunteers to join us for these cleanup events to beautify our historic downtown.”

Corporate groups and individuals interested in participating in”Make Downtown Shine” should call 207-8605 or 216-9622. The City also is seeking contributions of cleaning supplies, plants and other materials needed for the improvement event.
