Recent news releases

11/21: $1 million available to promote affordable housing

Requests for Proposals (RFP) are currently being accepted to promote the creation and preservation of affordable housing. Preference will be given to the contemplated target areas as specified by the newly approved City’s Strategic Plan for community development. Preference will also be given to those projects using green building techniques and energy saving components as well as those projects that use the facilities of the San Antonio Housing Trust Finance Corporation.


11/20: Third Public Meeting scheduled to discuss the proposed Jefferson Neighborhood Conservation District

The City’s Planning and Development Services Department and the Jefferson Neighborhood Conservation District Planning Team are holding a third public meeting to discuss the proposed Jefferson Neighborhood Conservation District at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 11 at the Jefferson High School cafeteria, located on 723 Donaldson Avenue.

11/18: New position available for At-Large Boards and Commissions

The At-Large Boards and Commissions are seeking to fill the following position: VIA Metropolitan Transit Authority. Citizens that may be interested in being a part of their local government are encouraged to apply.

11/18: Garbage and recyclable collections for Thanksgiving holiday

In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, there will be no garbage or recyclables collection on Thursday, November 27.

11/18: Thanksgiving holidays’ schedule of City services

Garbage, recyclables and brush will not be collected on Thursday, November 27. Residents who receive Friday two-cart automated collection or the green bin manual recycling will receive their regularly scheduled service on Friday, November 28, while City Hall and most municipal offices will be closed to celebrate the Thanksgiving Day holidays.

The City’s Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK), Commission is still accepting applications for vendor booths for the 2009 MLK March and Commemorative Program.

Assistant City Manager Frances A. Gonzalez was recently selected by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) as the 2008 recipient of the Assistant Excellence in Leadership Award in Memory of Buford M. Watson, Jr.

The City’s Solid Waste Management Department’s Keep San Antonio Beautiful program has been awarded the H-E-B/Keep Texas Beautiful Green Bag Grant.


11/13: Tips for a healthy holidays

The holidays are almost upon us, which means it’s time for good food, spending time with family and friends, and stress. In order to help business professionals have a healthier and happier holiday season, the City's Economic Development Department’s (EDD) South Texas Women’s Business Center (STWBC) is hosting a lunch chat entitled “Holidaying Healthy” with Spectrum Club General Manager Suzy Gray from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 20 at the San Antonio Central Library’s Auditorium, 600 Soledad.

11/13: MLK Commission announces 2009 MLK March and Commemorative Program keynote speaker

The City’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is proud to announce that Manuel V. Scott, an original Freedom Writer, will be the 2009 MLK March and Commemorative Program keynote speaker.

11/12: Texas Recycles Day scheduled for this Saturday

Saturday, November 15, is Texas Recycles Day. Residents, especially those who live in apartment complexes, looking for an easy way to dispose of gently used appliances, furniture, mattresses, clothing and electronic materials are encouraged to load up their items and bring them to Woodlawn Park, 1103 Cincinnati, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

11/10: City’s Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization Program celebrates 10th Anniversary

The City of San Antonio’s Housing and Neighborhood Services Department’s Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization (NCR) Program is celebrating its 10th Anniversary.


11/7: Second Public Meeting scheduled for Camp Bullis Joint Land Use Study

The City and the Camp Bullis Joint Land Use Study Executive Committee are hosting a public meeting to discuss the Camp Bullis Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 20 at the Reagan High School Cafeteria, located at 19000 Ronald Reagan Drive.

11/7: “Smart Business, Smart Financing”

As the I-35 corridor continues to grow, the opportunity for small businesses within that community increases. The City's Economic Development Department’s (EDD) South Texas Women’s Business Center (STWBC) wants to assist small business owners succeed within that area. For that reason, the STWBC in conjunction with Capital CDC and the South Texas Business Fund will host a seminar to help business owners develop their business plans from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 12 at Northeast Lake College – Library, 1201 Kitty Hawk Rd.


11/6: Veteran’s Day Parade to close certain streets
 
Hundreds of community leaders and citizens will gather downtown this Saturday, November 8 for the 9th Annual Veteran’s Day Parade to pay homage to the men and women who have served our country. Motorists will be diverted as the City closes several downtown streets to accommodate the event.

The City's Economic Development Department (EDD) Small Business Division is offering a free seminar entitled “Mentor Protégé Programs– A Win-Win Partnership” on Wednesday, November 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Cliff Morton Development and Business Service Center, 1901 S. Alamo, training rooms A & B.


11/4: City teams up with Spurs to beautify San Antonio

The City of San Antonio’s Housing and Neighborhood Department is teaming up with the San Antonio Spurs to clean-up a local community.


11/3: Texas Recycles Day

The City’s Solid Waste Management Department in conjunction with area businesses will celebrate Texas Recycles Day (TRD) from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 15 at Woodlawn Lake Park, 1103 Cincinnati.


11/3: Veterans’ Day holiday schedule of City services

Garbage, recyclables and brush will be collected on Tuesday, November 11, while City Hall and most municipal offices will be closed to observe the Veterans’ Day holiday.

10/31: Movies by Moonlight returns after overwhelming response

The Duke will ride his way onto the big screen on Thursday, November 6 for the Movies by Moonlight’s showing of the “greatest western” of all time The Searchers. Showtime starts at 6:30 p.m. with live, pre-entertainment.

10/31: 2009 MLK Distinguished Achievement

The City’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is seeking nominations for the 2009 Martin Luther King, Jr. Distinguished Achievement Award. Bexar County residents are encouraged to nominate members of the community for the award.


10/29: City creates new community development advisory board

The City’s Department of Planning and Development Services will utilize a newly created Community Development Advisory Committee (CDAC) to gain citizen input on implementing a strategic plan for reinvestment planning, coordinating city resources, and leveraging private sector investment within San Antonio.

If you are a woman curious about how to start a successfully owned business then the City's Economic Development Department’s (EDD) South Texas Women’s Business Center (STWBC) has an event just for you.

10/27: Building a sustainable community

The City’s Office of Environmental Policy is hosting a series of workshops that began this morning and will run through October 30 focusing on how to make San Antonio a sustainable community. Each workshop will be a think tank to help generate ideas that will assist the City in developing a sustainability policy that advances the city’s social, economic and environmental needs.

10/24: City’s Fleet Department recognized as 7th best fleet operation in North America

The City’s Fleet Department received national recognition this week as they were named as one of the top ten fleet operations in the nation. San Antonio was ranked as the seventh most efficient fleet operation in North America by Government Fleet Magazine during the CCG/FASTER Annual National Conference in Norfolk, Virginia.

10/24: Houston Street Fair and Market celebrates third anniversary with a Fall Festival

Since October 2005, the Houston Street Fair and Market (HSFM) has transformed downtown Houston Street into such themes as a winter wonderland and a rodeo to a beach and most recently an animal kingdom. This Saturday, October 25, the HSFM promises to be bigger and better as it celebrates three years of bringing live entertainment, arts and culture to downtown San Antonio. The free event will run from noon until 6:00 p.m.

10/23: PTAC presents “How to do business with FEMA”

The City's Economic Development Department (EDD) Small Business Division’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) will host two information sessions in conjunction with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) entitled “How to do business with FEMA” on Wednesday, October 29 and Thursday, October 30.

10/20: EDD seminar to focus on food service businesses

The City’s Economic Development Department (EDD) Small Business Division will be hosting a seminar on Wednesday, November 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Frost Bank Tower, 100 W. Houston St., Suite 1900. The seminar entitled “Food Service Done Right- Learn the Basics” is geared toward prospective food service owners.


10/17: Citizens reminded to display political signs in designated areas

The City of San Antonio would like to remind residents about the requirements to display political signs. Per City ordinance, failure to place political signs within designated areas could result in the sign being removed.

10/16: City celebrates National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week

10/13: City introduces hearing impaired voting equipment

The City’s Clerk’s Office in conjunction with Councilwoman Delicia Herrera, District 6, held a news conference today to introduce new equipment that will be used during early voting to assist the hearing impaired.

10/10: City-Toyota Green Clean-up Project wraps up today

Today marked the end of the City-Toyota Green Clean-up Project as more than 122 Toyota Team Members and its on-site suppliers volunteered their time to help spruce up areas of Brian McClain Park, Friesenhahn Park and Comanche Lookout Park in District 10 by spreading mulch, picking up trash and upgrading facilities.

10/10: Early voting for the November 4 Election begins October 20

Early voting for the November 4 Joint General and Special Election begins Monday, October 20 and ends Friday, October 31. Early voting sites are located at the Bexar County Courthouse and 39 other locations throughout the city. Voting hours vary depending on date and location.

Today, the City-Toyota Green Clean-up Project hit the trails of McAllister Park in District 9 as 189 Toyota Team Members installed fences, upgraded facilities and painted and maintained the Dog Park.

10/7: PTAC seminar informs businesses on the benefits of good presentation skills

The City's Economic Development Department (EDD) Small Business Division’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) will host a free seminar entitled “Presentation Skills” on Tuesday, October 28, to educate small businesses on how to market their business products and services to federal agencies. The workshop will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Cliff Morton Development and Business Service Center, 1901 South Alamo, training rooms A&B.


10/6: City-Toyota Green Clean-Up Project continues this week, homeless dog finds a new home

After a week-long break, the City-Toyota Green Clean-up Project continued today as 186 Toyota Team Members and its on-site suppliers rolled up their sleeves to help beautify Cuellar Park, Oscar Perez Park and Tom Slick Park in District 6 by spreading mulch, painting soccer goals, bleachers and a pool house.

10/1: Applications will continue to be accepted for At-Large Boards and Commissions

10/1: River Walk and Downtown Business District Vending Permit Applications Available on October 13

Vendors who desire to sell novelty items on the River Walk and in the Downtown business district can apply for vending permits starting Monday, October 13. All vendors, including those with current novelty vending permits, must apply. Applications will be available at the Downtown Operations Department located at 202 E. Nueva during business days from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or accessed at www.sanantonio.gov. The deadline for applications is Monday, November 10 at 4:00 p.m.

9/30: Time is running out to register to vote for the November 4 Election

Monday, October 6, is the last day for citizens to register to be eligible to vote in the City’s November 4 Joint General and Special Election.


9/26: City-Toyota Green Clean-up Project wraps up first week with District 5 beautification projects

Today marked the end of the first week for the City-Toyota Green Clean-up Project as more than 100 Toyota Team Members volunteered their time to help spruce up areas of Normoyle Park located at 700 Culberson in District 5.

9/25: Voelcker Park visitors to learn about “Wacky World of Spider Webs”

Nature aficionados are invited to learn more about “Spiders—Wild and Wacky Webs” while enjoying the beautiful scenery at Voelcker Park, 12000 N.W. Military Highway, during a community open house from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 4.

9/25: District 4 takes center stage in City-Toyota Green Clean-Up Project

More than 180 Toyota Team Members took to cleaning up Arnold Park in District 4 today as part of the City-Toyota Green Clean-up Project. Today marked day four of the joint community project targeting 17 sites throughout the city.

9/24: Casablanca graces the big screen at this week’s Movies by Moonlight showing

The famous on-screen pair of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman will grace the big screen at the Movies by Moonlight’s showing of Casablanca. This timeless classic will be shown this Thursday, September 25 at HemisFair Park starting at 7:00 p.m. As part of the Casablanca theme, pre-entertainment will include ballroom dancing lessons and a special performance.

9/23: City to replace Red Oaks on Main Plaza

The City of San Antonio, responding to analysis by several independent tree experts, has agreed to remove three Schumard Red Oaks in Main Plaza that have become diseased and decayed with old age. Two of the Red Oaks are located on the north side of the Plaza, and one is located on the south side.

9/23: Day two of City-Toyota Green Clean-up Project helps spruce up District 2

The City-Toyota Green Clean-up Project was in full gear today as more than 325 volunteers took to the east side of San Antonio to spruce up several much needed areas in District 2.

The City’s Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) will respond to a request from the City of Houston to aid in the clean up process from Hurricane Ike.


9/19: Local high schools join in fight to eradicate graffiti

The City is gearing up for the 5th Annual Graffiti Wipeout Volunteer Day taking place on Saturday, September 27, by hosting three mini-graffiti wipeouts with local high schools on Tuesday, September 23.

9/18: City-Toyota Green Clean-Up Project: Team members pledge to beautify San Antonio

During City Council Ceremonials today, City leaders and Toyota officials pledged to team up to clean up with a new joint community project that will help beautify San Antonio. The City-Toyota Green Clean-Up Project will target 17 sites throughout the city that range from trash collection and curb maintenance to brush clean up, tree planting and painting.

9/18: Second public meeting scheduled to discuss the Downtown West Neighborhood Plan

The City of San Antonio Planning and Community Development Department will hold a second public meeting to discuss plans for Downtown Neighborhood- West Neighborhood Plan on Thursday, September 25 at 6:00 p.m. at the Development and Business Services Center, 2nd Floor Training Rooms A & B, 1901 S. Alamo.

9/17: Public invited to proposed future land use plan and economic development goals workshop for Eastern Triangle Community Plan

The Eastern Triangle Community Plan Business and Development Meeting is set for Tuesday, September 23 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Highland Social Club, located at 2929 South W.W. White Road. Business, commercial property and vacant property owners are highly encouraged to attend.

9/16: New location for Hurricane Ike volunteer operations center

The San Antonio Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (SAVOAD) Volunteer Operation Center (VOC) will be moving to a new location beginning Wednesday, September 17. The VOC will be located at Brooks City-Base, Building 1154 located at 8039 Challenger Drive.

9/15: Prime Contractor Connection

The City’s Economic Development Department’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), is offering a free seminar entitled Prime Contractor Connection on Tuesday, September 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Development & Business Services Center located at 1901 S. Alamo 2nd Floor, Training Rooms A and B.

9/14: Hurricane Ike prompts call for medical and other volunteers

City, County and State officials are preparing for the forecasted landfall of Hurricane Ike on the Texas coast. As they plan for the potential impact, medical professionals are asked to volunteer their services to assist evacuees who could possibly arrive in San Antonio.
 

9/12: Forum scheduled for Camp Bullis Joint Land Use Study

9/11: Hurricane Evacuees to register at San Antonio Reception Center
 

All evacuees seeking shelter from Hurricane Ike should register at the Reception Center at Port San Antonio. Once registered, evacuees will be given directions to their assigned shelter.

9/11: Volunteers needed to assist with Hurricane Ike

As Hurricane Ike prepares to make landfall along the Texas coast, volunteers are needed to assist. Medical professionals are asked to volunteer their services to assist evacuees who have arrived in San Antonio.

9/10: Residents reminded to always be prepared for an emergency

The City’s Office of Emergency Management wants to remind residents to “understand, plan and act” by being prepared in case of any emergency. Creating a family plan and emergency supply kits to always have ready at home are two important steps residents can take to remain prepared for emergencies.

As the Texas prepares for Hurricane Ike to make landfall, the City of San Antonio’s Emergency Operations Center wants to remind individuals to be prepared and know what to do in case of an evacuation from their jurisdiction.

9/9: Movies by Moonlight kicks off with nice turnout

Grease was the word as more than 300 moviegoers came down to HemisFair Park last Thursday for the kick off of Movies By Moonlight. The next movie is set for this Thursday, September 11 and will feature Titanic.

9/9: Call for volunteers in response to Hurricane Ike

The San Antonio Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (SAVOAD) is getting ready for a major response event as Hurricane Ike heads towards the Texas Coast. Resources are being mobilized in anticipation of Ike’s landfall. To aid in the recruiting effort, the SAVOAD activated a Volunteer Operations Center today at the Freeman Coliseum, Frontier Room, 3201 E. Houston St. Additional hours of operation will continue Wednesday through Sunday from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

8/29: Free movies provide a way for residents to enjoy downtown

Grab your blankets and lawn chairs and head downtown to watch Hollywood’s stars under the stars. Starting Thursday, September 4, HemisFair Park will transform into an outdoor theater when the City’s Downtown Operations Department kicks off Movies By Moonlight.

Foreclosure prevention is one of the featured topics to be discussed at this year’s Community Development Summit. Hosted by the City’s Planning and Community Development Department, the summit is set for September 15 through September 17 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

For the 11th consecutive year, the City’s Purchasing and General Services Department received the National Purchasing Institute’s Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award, which recognizes organizational excellence in public procurement.

Community stakeholders are invited to provide input on proposed changes to the Downtown Neighborhood Plan: West Neighborhood Land Use Plan on Tuesday, September 2 at 6:00 p.m. at the Development and Business Services Center, 2nd Floor Training Rooms A&B, located on 1901 S. Alamo.

Neighborhood associations, community organizations or anyone interested in learning more about the City’s FY 2009 Proposed Budget are encouraged to tune into TVSA-21, the City’s government access channel, to view a comprehensive video that describes the budget, the City’s revenue sources, and how residents can participate in the process.

8/22: 2nd Annual Car Show cruises downtown to the next Houston Street Fair and Market

Classic car lovers get ready to rev up your engines for the Houston Street Fair and Market’s 2nd Annual Car Show scheduled for Saturday, August 30 from noon until 6:00 p.m. More than 100 sleek and shiny cars, from hot rods to custom pick up trucks, will be line Houston Street at the event which will feature the People’s Choice Awards for first through third place trophies and prizes.

8/22: Fort Sam Houston Growth Management Plan stimulates City’s East Side

The City’s Office of Military Affairs is hosting a series of community meetings to discuss the Growth Management plan surrounding Fort Sam Houston. Starting Monday, August 25 through Wednesday, August 27, the public will have an opportunity to review and provide comments on the proposed plan.

8/20: Community meeting set to discuss Voelcker Park first phase

Stimson Associates and D.I.R.T. Studio, consultants for the Voelcker Park project, will discuss Phase IA improvements at a community meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Coker United Methodist Church, John R. Gibbs Building 1204, 231 East North Loop Road.

8/20: Public invited to final planning workshop for the Eastern Triangle Community Plan

8/18: City to plant native Cedar Elm tree at Main Plaza

The City has been advised by independent arborists, that it is necessary to replace at least two unhealthy Schumard Red Oak trees at Main Plaza due to signs of decay and the trees’ declining health. The City consulted with several arborists before reaching the decision to replace the two ailing Red Oaks. Additional testing is being conducted on two other Red Oaks due to existing signs of aging. Crews will begin the process to remove the decaying trees starting today.

7/24: Residents advised to avoid low water crossings

The San Antonio area is experiencing significant rainfall in some areas, with up to half-inches expected in the area. Flash flooding may occur, resulting in a considerable amount of water over certain roads and hidden dangers at low water crossings. Motorists are advised to avoid low water crossings and to not drive around or move protective barricades installed at these crossings.

7/3: PERF report recommendations provided to residents

The City released today the results of the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) report which evaluated polices and procedures of the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD). The study was recommended last November by Police Chief William McManus to examine how the department can improve service delivery to residents as well as address high-profile policies within the department including departmental training practices; the use-of-force and the process by which citizens file complaints against officers.

The City’s International Affairs department today announced that one of India’s fastest growing conglomerates will invest $1 million in the Alamo City. The Guidelines Group will establish an office in San Antonio and invest in the real estate, IT, trading and healthcare industries. The announcement comes four months after Mayor Phil Hardberger’s trade mission to India where he and other local leaders worked towards making Chennai, India San Antonio’s newest Sister City.

KLN Steel Products has unveiled plans to consolidate its nationwide operations in San Antonio and add 500 new jobs to their local workforce. The company, which manufactures high quality institutional furniture, currently employs 200 people at their present location in San Antonio at 2 Winnco Drive and is making plans to secure additional facilities to meet production and workforce demands for their expanded operations.

6/11: City announces new round of playground inspections

Mayor Phil Hardberger and City Manager Sheryl Sculley announced today that the City would begin a fresh round of comprehensive inspections of all its 114 playgrounds. “There is no higher priority for us as a community than the safety of our children,” Mayor Hardberger said.

6/11: Educating youth on the effects of graffiti

Combating graffiti takes a community effort, including, law enforcement, clean-up efforts and anti-graffiti education. Educating elementary school children can be an effective way of wiping out graffiti. As part of their efforts to continue to abate graffiti in San Antonio, the City’s Housing and Neighborhood Services Department’s Graffiti Abatement Program will donate two copies of the book Graffiti in Tahiti by Victoria Wilson-Merritt for each of the 24 public libraries at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 16 at a news conference at the Central Library, 600 Soledad.

5/27: City’s 2008 Community Survey completed

In 2007, the City of San Antonio contracted with the Cultural Policy Institute (CPI) of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) to conduct a city-wide community survey in January/February of 2008. The survey was conducted in both English and Spanish by telephone.

5/27: Municipal Court begins extended Night Court service

Starting June 1, Municipal Court will extend its service to the community through new convenient night court hours. The court will hear hourly non-jury trials Monday through Thursday in accordance with the following schedule: Monday and Thursday non-jury trials will be heard at 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday non-jury trials will be heard at 4:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

4/18: First woman promoted to Assistant Police Chief in City’s history

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus announced today his promotion of the first woman to the position of Assistant Police Chief. Effective April 19, 2008, Deputy Chief Geraldine J. Garcia will be the first Hispanic woman in the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) to serve as Assistant Chief on the Police Chief’s Command Staff. As Assistant Police Chief, Garcia will oversee the Tactical Support Division and the Investigations Division, as the Commander of the Administration Bureau.

4/3: Citizens reminded of neighborhood on-street parking regulations during downtown special events

As the city gears up for the NCAA® Men’s Final Four® this weekend, the City’s Downtown Operations Department and Housing and Neighborhood Services Code Compliance Division want to remind citizens of the rules for the neighborhood on-street parking decal program. This rule will be strictly enforced each day during the Final Four® events taking place April 5-7.

4/2: SAPD Headquarters named as site for new Federal Courthouse

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced today that the San Antonio Police Headquarters located at 214 W. Nueva has been selected as the site for the new San Antonio Federal Courthouse.

4/1: NCAA® Men’s Final Four® events to close certain streets

Thousands of college basketball fans will converge on downtown San Antonio this weekend for the 2008 NCAA® Men’s Final Four® events. Motorists will be diverted as the City closes several downtown and other streets to accommodate events. Listed below are street closures and associated closure times.

4/1: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites open until April 15

The April 15 tax season filing deadline is fast approaching and the City’s Department of Community Initiatives (DCI) and its partners in the San Antonio Coalition for Family Economic Progress (SACFEP) want to encourage eligible taxpayers who have not filed their 2007 income tax return to take advantage of the services offered through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

 

3/27: Man’s best friends invited to Dog Tails on Voelcker Trails

Bring your best friends and family to join the City’s Parks and Recreation Department for an organized dog walk and open house to be held Saturday, April 5 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the future Voelcker Park, 12000 N.W. Military Highway.

3/27: Foreclosure prevention workshop offers homeowners options

The City’s Department of Community Initiatives (DCI) is presenting a free workshop to help prevent San Antonio homeowners who are behind on their mortgage payments from losing their homes. The workshop is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 29 at Northwest Vista College, Huisache Hall (Student Center), 3535 N. Ellison Drive.

3/24: City participates in National Super Saturday-Economic Stimulus Day

Seniors, low income residents and disabled veterans are encouraged to file their 2007 tax return for free at any Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site on Saturday, March 29 as the City participates in the IRS-sponsored National Super Saturday – Economic Stimulus Day.

3/24: City ready to help citizens clean up

If you have old appliances, furniture, mattresses, tires and other old items sitting around the house taking up space then it’s time for you kick-it-up a notch by taking your spring cleaning to the next level. The City is holding its annual City-wide Cleanup Day on April 5.


3/24: 60+ Mardi Gras Parade features senior royalty

San Antonio’s unofficial “krewe” of City-sponsored senior nutrition centers will bring East Side streets alive as the 60+ Mardi Gras Parade celebrates its 15th year on Friday, March 28, at 10:00 a.m. Similar to the New Orleans festivities, kings and queens representing 40 senior nutrition centers will lead the way as decorative floats wind their way along a four-mile route from Martin Luther King Park, located at 3503 MLK Drive, to Comanche Park #2, located at 2600 Rigsby.

3/20: Public Meeting rescheduled for the Proposed E. Commerce Street Arts & Entertainment District

The City of San Antonio Planning and Community Development Department in partnership with San Antonio for Growth on the Eastside (SAGE) will be holding a public meeting for community stakeholders to provide their input on design standards for the proposed East Commerce Street Arts & Entertainment District. This meeting has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 26 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Claude W. Black Community Center, 2805 E. Commerce Street.

3/20: 2008 Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice set for March 29

San Antonians are invited to several events commemorating the legacy of civil rights leader Cesar E. Chavez, including the 12th Annual Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice on Saturday, March 29.

3/19: Artist selected for Mayor’s memorial to
honor San Antonio’s war heroes


On March 14 City Council approved a $50,000 contract with Barbara Grygutis Sculpture LLC, for the conceptual design of a memorial to honor local Medal of Honor recipients in the Veterans Memorial Plaza Historic District (formally known as Auditorium Circle Historic District).


3/17: Historic Main Plaza opening day celebration plans announced

Established in 1731 as the Villa de San Fernando by Spanish settlers of the Canary Islands, Main Plaza has always been at the center of San Antonio’s municipal government. Being lauded as the Heart of the City, plans were announced today for the Main Plaza opening day celebration, scheduled for Sunday, April 13.

3/14: Centro Info Center offers 24-hour restroom facilities

Downtown San Antonio is host to two of the top tourist attractions in the state of Texas. Each year the city hosts more than 26 million visitors and as visitation increases so does the demand for public restrooms serving visitors and citizens in the downtown area, the City officially opened the doors today to the Centro Info Center, located under the northeast ramp of the Riverbend Parking Garage at 412 E. Commerce.

3/14: City looking for a few good gallons of paint

Got paint? If you have cans of paint sitting around your home collecting dust then the City has a proposition for you. The City’s Housing and Neighborhood Services Department’s Graffiti Abatement Program in partnership with the Solid Waste Management Department is looking for a few good gallons of paint as they kick-off a paint drive next week to collect a minimum of 2000 gallons of paint for their 2008 Graffiti Wipeout event.


3/13: Public Hearing set to discuss priority housing, community development needs

San Antonio residents are invited to attend a public meeting to discuss priority housing and community development needs on Monday, March 17 in the City Council Chambers at the Municipal Plaza Building, 103 S. Main Ave. Interested citizens can sign up to speak starting at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will start at 7:00 p.m.

3/13: Good Friday holiday schedule of City services

Garbage, recyclables and brush will be collected on Friday, March 21, while City Hall and most municipal offices will be closed to observe the Good Friday holiday.

3/11: Live Oaks find permanent home in historic Main Plaza

Two live oak trees will find a permanent home in the City’s newly renovated Main Plaza. The nearly 40 year-old trees are currently located at the Briscoe Western Museum on the River Walk and are scheduled to make their way to the city’s historic center of downtown tonight through Market Street.

3/1: Low-income, recipients of Social Security and veteran’s benefits urged to file tax return

The City’s Department of Community Initiatives (DCI) is advising local residents that the only way to receive an economic stimulus payment this year is to file a 2007 tax return. This includes people who are not normally required to file such as low-income workers, those who receive Social Security benefits and those who receive veteran’s disability compensation, pension or survivor benefits.

2/29: City to unveil revamped Voelcker Park web site with improved public access, information

A new City of San Antonio web site boasting colorful photos and improved public access will go live on Friday, February 29. The site features a community meeting video, detailed maps of the Voelcker Park project and clearly outlined links, making the site user friendly and easy to navigate.The site contains information on the history of Voelcker Park and the latest information on meetings, site tours and consultant visits. The new address, www.voelckerpark.com, will be easier for citizens to locate and to remember.


2/27: Food Service Done Right – Learn the Basics

If you’ve ever wanted to start your own food service business then this is the seminar for you. On Wednesday, March 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Frost Bank Tower, 100 W. Houston St., Suite 1900, the City’s Economic Development Department (EDD) Small Business Division will be hosting a seminar for prospective food service owners.


2/25: City hosting job fair tomorrow

The City of San Antonio will hold a job fair from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. tomorrow, February 26 at the Alamodome, 100 Montana, to fill a variety of full-time, part-time and temporary positions.


2/22: Voelcker Park consultants to present conceptual design plan at March 3 meeting

Stimson Associates and D.I.R.T. Studio, consultants for the Voelcker Park master plan project, will present a conceptual design plan with options for recommended programming for the park at a community meeting slated for 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 3, at the Campus of the San Antonio Jewish Community located at 12500 N.W. Military Drive.


2/22: City wants you to know when “It’s your turn”

The City’s Solid Waste Management Department wants you to get brushed up on the rules for brush collection. In an effort to make sure residents are prepared when it’s their turn for collection, the City is enhancing its brush and bulky item program’s notification system.

As San Antonio gears up for the NCAA Final Four, the City is looking for volunteers and corporate groups who want to make downtown even better for our visitor’s by helping to Make Downtown Shine.

2/21: City seeking volunteers to plant trees

The City of San Antonio is looking for volunteers to assist them in planting over 100 trees. From 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 1 volunteers will plant trees at various VIA bus stops across the city.


2/21: Mayor Hardberger to lead trade mission to India

Mayor Phil Hardberger will lead a delegation of city leaders in a trade mission to India on Friday, February 22, to forge economic and cultural ties and work toward building a Sister City relationship with the City of Chennai.

2/20: Sweetheart gala to thank volunteers for their service

More than 1,000 senior volunteers will be honored during the Comprehensive Nutrition Project’s Annual Sweetheart/Volunteer Recognition Dance scheduled for Friday February 22, 2008, in Exhibit Hall D at the Convention Center, 200 E. Market, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The center relocated from McCreless Mall to the new City Base Landing Shopping Center, 3154 S.E. Military Drive.


2/14: Resource fair connects residents with financial assistance

The City’s Center for Working Families (CWF) is hosting a Resource Fair from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 15, 2008 at the Willie C. Velasquez Learning Center at 1302 N. Zarzamora Street. Residents can get information on a variety of City programs including child care, utility assistance, job counseling, job placement and free income tax preparation services.

2/14: City wipes out over 400,000 square feet of graffiti in three months

The City of San Antonio is making strides when it comes to wiping out graffiti within the city.


2/13: Final week begins for delayed warrant arrest period

Individuals with outstanding misdemeanor warrants have until February 18 to submit payment and avoid the risk of arrest under a delayed enforcement period. Already, more than 7,808 warrants have been cleared at Municipal Court as a result of the delayed enforcement. The 2008 Statewide Warrant Roundup is set to begin on Tuesday, February 19.

2/11: City’s International Affairs Department launches 2008 San Antonio Export Leaders Program

The City of San Antonio International Affairs Department is accepting applications for the 2008 San Antonio Export Leaders Program (SAELP). The program is designed for companies that are considering entering or expanding their position in the global marketplace. To date, 79 graduates have successfully generated more than $40 million after completing the program. Application deadline is April 18.

2/4: City announces payment options for individuals with outstanding warrants

In preparation for the 2008 Statewide Warrant Roundup, the City’s Municipal Court announced today that individuals who have unpaid fines related to misdemeanor violations such as traffic violations and City ordinance violations will have from now until February 18 to submit payment under a grace period.

1/31: VITA Super Saturday links disabled community to resources

The San Antonio Coalition for Family Economic Progress and the National Disability Institute is hosting a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Super Saturday event on Saturday, February 2 to assist persons with disabilities with their tax returns and link them to valuable community resources.

1/29: Council to hear progress report on bond program

City Council will hear a progress report on the $550 million Bond Program that San Antonio citizens approved last May during the Council’s B-Session,  scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, in the “B” Room of the Municipal Plaza Building. The Council will be briefed on the 151 projects that make up the largest bond program in the city’s history.

1/29: State of the City Address replayed on TVSA

Mayor Phil Hardberger’s 2008 State of the City Address is being replayed continuously on TVSA, Cable Channel 21 -- the City’s government access channel, today and will be replayed through February 9. The Address will air Saturday and Sunday at 9:00 a.m. It will also air Monday through Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

1/25: Houston Street Fair brings Wild West experience to Downtown San Antonio

Thirty-five Longhorn cattle will steer down Houston Street accompanied by authentic cowboys on horseback to kick off the rodeo-themed Houston Street Fair and Market (HSFM) on Saturday, January 26. The cattle drive will begin at 11:00 a.m. at IH-35 and Houston Street and head east to the Alamo.
