April 15 is just around the corner, if you need tax assistance....just ask VITA

April 15 is just around the corner so if you still have not filed your 2009 income tax return and you made less than $45,000 last year, there is still time for you to receive free income tax assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Sites are open throughout the city.

T
axes are filed electronically. Refunds can be electronically deposited in bank accounts in as little as 10 to 14 days. There are over 20 VITA sites available to assist residents. When visiting a VITA site, individuals should bring the following items:

•A valid driver’s license or photo I.D.;

•All W-2 forms; 1099 forms, if applicable;

•Social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers for all family

members; those who are filing jointly must bring their spouse;

The exact total of any federal economic stimulus payment received from 2008, if any (can bring a copy of IRS stimulus announcement letter or other document for this purpose);
All copies of 1098 mortgage statement(s) and/or Tax Assessor receipt(s) indicating real estate taxes (even if taxpayers do not itemize deductions, government will now allow a portion of real estate taxes as a new deduction);
•Checking and/or savings account numbers (up to three accounts) for deposit of their refund directly to their account.

Don't let the tax deadline creep up on you, to find a VITA site near you, call 2-1-1 or visit www.vitasa.org.
