Ground is broken on new Airport Parking Garage

Mayor Phil Hardberger and San Antonio City Councilmembers recently broke ground on the airport’s new $46 million Long-Term Parking Garage. The structure, set to be partially operational by Christmas 2007, will bring an additional 2,800 spaces to the airport’s parking inventory.

The garage also represents the first step in a comprehensive airport expansion project, a program which calls for the new parking structure, two new terminal facilities and a new roadway system.

“This is truly the start of something big,” said Hardberger. “Our airport is going to look dramatically different in a fairly short period of time and this garage project marks the beginning of that transformation.”

Once the parking structure is completed, San Antonio International Airport will have almost 9,000 spaces available to its customers, an increase of almost 50 percent from its current total.

“The airport expansion is absolutely vital to the city,” said City Manager Sheryl Sculley. “We must ensure that our airport stays competitive when it comes to the facilities, as well as the wide-ranging availability of air-service options.”
