Step up to recreation!

The City's Parks and Recreation Department invites the San Antonio community to get active, get fit,  and "Step up to Recreation." The new promotional campaign focuses on the physical and mental benefits of regular recreational activity.

The campaign, which launched in July during Parks and Recreation Month, features City leaders and their families showcasing various ways residents can be active within their communities. Recreation is essential to personal health. It helps to reduce stress, not to mention, it can significantly reduce the risk of serious health conditions such as strokes, coronary heart disease and diabetes. Did you know that individuals that visited their local parks on a frequent basis and engaged in physically-active park behaviors also made fewer visits to their doctor (for reasons other than a regular check-up). Those individuals were also more likely to have a positive view of their overall health.

Recreation also builds stronger communities. Children that become involved with sports and the arts are less likely to become involved with negative activities/behaviors, significantly reducing crimes that involve juvenile delinquents.

So, step up San Antonio and get fit. Visit a City park in your community. To find out about activities and services offered by the Parks and Recreation Department visit www.sanantonio.gov/sapar.
