Slow down for school zones
Summer
is almost over which means kids across the city will be heading back
to school. And as the school year begins, the San Antonio Police
Department wants all drivers to be cautious and slow down in area
school zones.
Motorists should be especially cautious around areas where students
may be walking such as neighborhoods, parking lots and cross walks.
Motorists caught speeding through a school zone will be fined $206
for the first 10 miles over the speed limit and five dollars for
each additional mile.
Pay special attention to buses and when approaching a moving school
bus with lights flashing from either direction, attempt to stop if
it is safe to do so. If the bus is fully stopped, meaning the stop
arm is extended from the driver’s side of the bus and the lights are
flashing, you MUST stop at least 20 meters from the front or rear of
the bus. Do not proceed until the lights stop flashing or the bus
moves ahead. All traffic in both directions must stop. Passing a
stopped school bus will result in a $642 fine. The fine almost
doubles when a motorist passes a stopped school bus in a
construction zone. Other violations excluding speeding will cost
motorists $206.
As the fall semester begins, school zones will be active and
officers will be in force to issue citations to drivers who ignore
the speed limit and flashing yellow lights. So don't forget to slow
down while driving through school zones.
