Well-done grilling techniques result in
rare fire accidents
San Antonians love to grill on a summer afternoon. The San Antonio
Fire Department offers residents some general safety tips to make
their outdoor cooking experience safe.
-
Always locate a barbecue away from any
combustible wall.
-
Set up grill in an open area away from
buildings, dry leaves or brush.
-
Place grill on a level surface away from
low hanging trees, deck railings, siding or any combustible materials.
-
It's a good idea to keep a fire
extinguisher within handy reach.
-
Use long-handled barbecue tools and
flame retardant mitts.
-
Do not wear loose clothing and watch for
dangling apron strings and shirttails.
-
NEVER leave children or pets unattended
near a hot grill.
-
NEVER leave a lit grill unattended.
-
Grills are designed to be operated
outside only.
-
Keep grill at least 10 feet away from
homes. Remember, it is a violation of the Fire Code to grill on
apartment patios in San Antonio.
-
Light it right
-
It is always best to follow
manufacturer’s instructions for lighting the grill.
-
Make sure barbecue is on level ground,
and away from windows and anything flammable.
-
Gas Grill Safety Tips
-
Before having a liquid propane cylinder
filled, check it for dents, gouges or other signs of disrepair. Make
sure there are no sharp bends in the hose or tubing.
-
Check and make sure all connections are
tight BEFORE turning on the gas. Leaks can be detected by wetting the
connections with a solution of soapy water and turning on the gas
momentarily.
-
Never store a spare LP cylinder under or
near a grill, heat source,or open flame.
-
Never ignite a gas grill with the lid
closed. The propane may accumulate inside, and when ignited, the lid
could blow off.
-
Charcoal Grill Safety Tips
-
Never burn charcoal inside of homes,
vehicles, tents, or campers.
-
NEVER use gasoline, or kerosene to start
the fire.
