Special leaf collection for two-cart automated waste service areas Solid waste ratepayers receiving the City’s new two-cart automated garbage and recyclables collection service will be provided with a special collection for leaves that cannot be disposed within the normal weekly garbage collection service. Residents will receive one special pick up per the City’s fiscal year (October 1 – September 30) at no additional charge for leaves or other excess waste material, up to eight cubic yards of material (about 6 ft x 8 ft x 6 ft of material). Subsequent requests for leaf only collections are at a reduced rate of $20 per request, for each eight cubic yards of leaf material collected. Residents on the two-cart system may place bagged leaves inside their brown automated cart on their regularly scheduled garbage collection day, anytime during the year, or may mulch or compost them. Although the two-cart system provides capacity twice the national average, some residents may generate excess materials such as leaves and may need additional disposal alternatives. The City recommends using mulching mowers (for leaves and grass) and backyard composting as additional alternatives to disposing of leaf and green waste materials. In addition, residents can utilize the following City programs: quarterly Free Landfill Disposal Day at area landfills/disposal sites; twice per year “Brush and Bulky Item” collection; the “Dial-A-Trailer” program; and disposing items at the Bitters Brush Mulch Recycling Facility. These programs offer residents several options in managing their household waste. Currently, the City has converted 40,000 customers to the two-cart automated collection system, as part of the City’s three and a half year conversion plan from manual collection.
