San Antonio to celebrate 22nd Annual Martin
Luther King, Jr. March
The City's Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission invites residents to
come out and celebrate the 22nd anniversary of the nation’s largest MLK March on
Monday, January 19. This year's MLK march will have a
patriotic theme so individuals are encouraged to show their
patriotic spirit by wearing red, white and blue clothing.
The annual MLK March starts at 10:00 a.m. at the MLK Freedom Bridge
near the Eastside Boys and Girls Club in the 3500 block of MLK Drive.
More than 100,000
people of all races and ages are expected to make the nearly
three-mile march in honor of Dr. King. The diverse crowd will journey through San Antonio’s
eastside to Pittman-Sullivan Park, 1101 Iowa.
Following the march, the MLK Commemorative Program will begin at
approximately noon
with keynote speaker Manuel V. Scott, an original Freedom Writer.
Scott, whose story was depicted in the 2007 Hollywood movie,
Freedom Writers, is a motivational speaker who has traveled
across the United States, Asia, Africa and Europe empowering
leaders, educators and youth by sharing his own life's journey from
a high school dropout to the inspiring college educated individual
he is today. The special musical guest for the day is Grammy
nominated Gospel artist Marvin Sapp.
A variety of other events are scheduled for the 2009 MLK
Commemoration, including the:
MLK Interfaith Service to benefit MLK scholarships;
MLK Distinguished Achievement Award;
MLK Art Symposium;
Trinity University lecture series, featuring L. Douglas Wilder, the
first African-American elected governor in the United States;
MLK Hip Hop Summit, focusing on AIDS, politics, and hip hop;
