Free Landfill Disposal Day helps residents get a jump start on spring cleaning

If you are looking to dispose of brush, furniture, old appliances and other bulky items, then make plans to stop by one of four convenient locations on Saturday, February 3, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to dispose of these items for free.

Landfill Disposal Day is an opportunity for residents who may not be scheduled for City brush collection service in the near future to get rid of lumber, remodeling debris, furniture, appliances, mattresses, brush, passenger car tires (limit 6), and other junk at no cost. This event is offered at the following drop-off locations:

  • BFI-Tessman Road Landfill, 7000 IH-10 East
(Exit Foster Road and stay on access road)

  • WM-Covel Road Landfill, 8611 Covel Road
(Take Loop 410 SW, exit Ray Ellison, head west and turn left at Covel Road)

  • TDS Starcrest Transfer Station, 11601 Starcrest Road

  • Southside Drop-Off Center, 5450 Castroville Road
(Adjacent to Camargo Park on Highway 90 West)

Landfill Disposal Days are available at no charge to San Antonio residential solid waste rate paying customers who pay the fee through their monthly CPS Energy utility bills. A copy of a recent CPS Energy bill and photo identification will be required at the event as proof of residency, and to obtain “free” disposal. Residents are asked to cover their items with a tarp prior to transporting to the site to avoid a potential “no tarp” fine in accordance with City Ordinance. Residents are also encouraged to donate any useable household items to their favorite charity rather than throwing them away.

The Bitters Brush Recycling Center, located at 1800 Old Bitters Road behind the Blossom Athletic Center, will also be open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. to accept only clean brush and tree limbs; no other items will be accepted.

No commercial/industrial waste or household hazardous waste will be accepted at Free Landfill Disposal Day. Contractors and commercial vehicles will not be allowed to participate in the free program but will be allowed to pay the normal landfill gate fee to dispose of their items on this day.

Residents who need to dispose of household hazardous wastes such as batteries, pesticides, pool chemicals, motor oil and paint can take them to the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Center at 7030 Culebra Road from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The center is also open Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Fridays from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Free Landfill Disposal Day is another measure the City takes to eliminate brush and bulky items placed on residential streets outside of the normal brush collection schedule. Equally important, offering disposal alternatives keeps these items off of City streets, decreases the number of illegal dumpsites, improves the aesthetics of local neighborhoods and protects public health, safety and welfare.
