Summer travel tips

It's officially summer which means millions of Americans are hitting the road to their vacation destination. But before you pack up the family and hit the door running, here are a few travel tips to assist you during this peak vacation season.

If you are thinking of flying airline carriers suggest that you keep the following tips in mind:

  1. Don't procrastinate. Make sure that you book flights early.

  2. Think about traveling during off-peak times. Off-peak times consist of mid-morning through early afternoon Monday through Thursday.

  3. Keep security in mind when packing. It's summer so security lines will be long. Remember that all bags will be screened or searched so you want to make sure that valuables and medications are packed in your carry-on luggage.

  4. Remember to have identification on all of your luggage and it's best not to lock your luggage. Most airlines provide complimentary ID tags at their ticket counters.

  5. Arrive early to the airport. Patrons should arrive at least two hours prior to their scheduled departure time.

  6. Dress to successfully navigate through security.

  7. Don't leave your house without a proper photo ID.

  8. Check in early. Most airlines will allow you to check in for flights online prior to departure.

  9. Stay close to your departure gate.

  10. Relax and enjoy your vacation.

  1. Check your tires. Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Properly inflated tires improves fuel economy.

  2. Stay on top of your fluids. Make sure you are up-to-date on your oil changes.

  3. Make sure you check the entire car before making a long trip. Be sure to inspect the belts and hoses.

  4. Prepare an emergency kit for your car. An emergency kit should be composed of a flashlight, jumper cables, a blanket, extra clothes, paper towels, extra washer fluid, a jug of water and nonperishable food.

  5. Pack smart. Make sure you pack only necessary items for the trip.

  6. Load smart. Don't pack items so high that your outward vision is blocked.

  7. Avoid fatigue. Don't drive when you are drowsy. make sure you get a full night's sleep before getting behind the wheel.

  8. If you are towing a trailer or another item, remember to be safe by keeping your speed down.

  9. Take the scenic route. Traveling by car allows you to enjoy all of the great scenery.

  10. Be nice. There will be a lot of cars on the road this summer so remember to use your signals and let faster drivers pass.
