Motorists advised to use caution during wet summer

High water rescueAs the San Antonio area continues to experience a wet summer, flash flooding may occur and result in a considerable amount of water over certain roads and hidden dangers at low water crossings. Residents are advised to avoid low water crossings and to not drive around or move protective barricades installed at these crossings.

Citizens can go to www.sanantonio.gov/streetclosures for an updated list of weather-related street closures or closures resulting from construction or other street hazards around San Antonio.

There are 165 low water crossings in San Antonio. Motorists who maneuver around barricades at low water crossings put their lives as well as the lives of emergency rescue personnel at risk. Crossing or disregarding a barricade is a Class B misdemeanor that includes a fine of up to $2,000 and up to 180 days in jail. Moving a barricade posted at a low water crossing also is a Class B misdemeanor that may result in a fine of up to $1,000 and up to two years in jail. You can be arrested for either offense. Additionally, the San Antonio Fire Department (SAFD) charges a fee of $400 for each person rescued from a designated low water crossing.

Motorists are reminded to “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” Motor vehicles are involved in half of all flood-related deaths, according to the National Weather Service. Many of these deaths are preventable if motorists are more cautious during severe weather events.

Citizens should not attempt to walk through rising floodwaters. As little as six inches of water can knock a person off their feet or move a small vehicle. If floodwaters continue to rise, move to higher ground.
