Project Cool seeks fan donations

As the temperatures begin to rise, the City of San Antonio wants everyone to remember the elderly community.

The City is once again teaming up with residents and several local corporate and human service organizations to collect and distribute electric box fans to help elderly citizens who may suffer most from high summer temperatures.

Through the City’s Project Cool Program, citizens are asked to donate new 18 inch box fans by dropping them off at any local fire station (excluding the airport station) June 2 through August 29. Fans will be distributed to eligible clients in San Antonio and Bexar County through Catholic Charities and the Society of St. Vincent DePaul. Eligible clients must be least 60 years old.

Project Cool was established in 1997. Since its inception, they have collected and distributed over 46,000 fans. Last summer, more than 6,700 seniors in the Bexar County area received fans.

Monetary donations will also be accepted. Checks can be made payable to “Catholic Charities -- Project Cool” and should be mailed or delivered to the Catholic Charities office at 202 West French Place, San Antonio, Texas 78212.

United Way of San Antonio will provide referral assistance for the program. Citizens should call 211 or 227-4357 if they would like to request a fan or if they would like to know where they could donate fans.

Along with the fans, information on how to correctly use them to promote home safety will be distributed and the Metropolitan Health District will provide information on steps that can be taken to avoid heat stroke and heat exhaustion.
