Safety tips for
summer fun
Summer is almost here! That means it
is time to pull out the barbecue grills and hit the pool. But before
you start to engage in summer activities, the San Antonio Fire
Department would like you to keep these safety tips in mind.
Barbecue Safety Tips:
-
Review
the manufacturer's instructions and safety precautions before
using the grill. Never use gasoline to start your cooking
fire.
-
Make
sure the grill is clean. Burnt on food and leftover grease are
fire hazards.
-
be
sure the grill is located in a safe area. Keep clear of trees,
wooden fencing or low hanging eaves. Do not barbecue on
balconies of multistory buildings.
-
Have a
method to extinguish the fire in case it gets out of control.
Close the lid or have a fire extinguisher, bucket of sand or
water hose close to the grill.
-
Use
utensils with long handles (18' or more is best) that do not
conduct heat.
-
Protect your family; keep children away from the grilling area.
Water
Safety Tips:
-
Never
leave children unsupervised around water. A child can drown in
as little as an inch of water. Don't leave your kid alone in the bath
or by the pool, even for a short time.
-
Flotation devices such as "water wings" should not be a
substitute for adequate supervision.
-
Do not
dive into water less than nine feet deep. If you are not sure
how deep the water is, do not dive in.
-
In
open water, be aware of undercurrents or undertows. Even the
best swimmer can be caught off guard by and undercurrent.
-
Always
be aware of where emergency equipment is located and be sure to
keep emergency numbers handy.
Additional Tips:
At an appropriate age, teach children
how to swim.
-
Do not run around a pool. Decks may be
wet and slippery.
-
Check for lifeguards.
-
Listen to lifeguards.
-
Do not swim for at least an hour after
eating. This can lead to muscle cramps.
-
No glass bottles.
-
Only dive in designated areas, which
will be clearly marked around the poolside.
-
Read warning signs -- Take notice of
all signs around the pool and stick to the rules.
