Haven
brings hope for area homeless
Construction is underway on Haven for
Hope, a unique facility that will provide a wide range of social
services to meet the needs of San Antonio’s homeless community in a
“one-stop” setting.
The 15-acre campus, located just west of downtown, will be geared to
combat the root causes of homelessness, with dozens of partner
agencies providing the necessary services to help homeless individuals
transform their lives. Far beyond shelter, food and clothing, Haven
for Hope’s services will be geared to address the root causes of
homelessness.
The facility will include more than 200,000 square feet of space and
more than 600 beds. Services will range from medical and dental care
to treatment for substance addiction. Job training, education and
legal support also will be provided. Proper identification assistance
such as social security cards and driver’s licenses also will be
offered.
Annually, 25,000 people in San Antonio are homeless. Approximately 40
percent of the homeless are families with children. Nearly 20 percent
suffer from mental illness and 60 percent suffer from substance abuse
problems. The facility, which already is being touted as a national
model, will incorporate best practices from a number of similar
facilities across the country to help chronically and temporarily
homeless people transition to permanent housing.
