Pick up a book and read

Read a good book lately? Join the San Antonio Public Library and participate in the Big Read 2009. This year, all San Antonio and Bexar County residents are invited to read, think about and discuss the timeless novel, Fahrenheit 451.

Written in 1953, the short novel written by Ray Bradbury, fired imaginations around the world. Fahrenheit 451 depicts a frightening future anti-utopia in which books are forbidden and to own or read a book is considered criminal activity. Written during the period of
McCarthyism, the heating up of the Cold War, and the rise of television in America, Fahrenheit 451 expresses concern about the pressures of advertising and consumerism, non-participatory communication, and social and political conformity.
