Main Plaza Opens

It's official, the plaza is now open. Main Plaza - The Heart of the City opened in grand fashion on April 13.
The event which celebrated the historic transformation of one of downtown's greatest treasures included a mariachi mass at San Fernando Cathedral, an indigenous blessing, various family cultural activities, an historical reenactment and a stellar musical lineup that included everything from traditional Mexican music to jazz music.

During the event's official ceremony, various members of the San Antonio community who played an intricate part in the revitalization of the plaza. At the end of the ceremony, Mayor Phil Hardberger flipped a switch to light the new Tobin Endowment fountains. The lighting of the fountains was accompanied by a musical serenade from the San Antonio Symphony.

Established in 1731 as the Villa de San Fernando by Spanish settlers of the Canary Islands, Main Plaza has always been the center of San Antonio's municipal government but now it will also be the center of attraction for concerts, art shows and other eclectic events.

Come out and enjoy the newly renovated Main Plaza. Each Saturday in May at 10:00 a.m., the San Antonio community can enjoy the Main Story Children's Literacy Series and each Sunday during the month from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the Tocada with Fox & Rabbit. Other May events include:
