Low-fare airlines arrive in San Antonio On April 14, Spirit Airlines officially entered the San Antonio market with a very special ribbon-cutting ceremony. The ultra low-cost carrier based in Miramar, Florida, began operations with a daily nonstop flight between San Antonio and Fort Lauderdale. A second daily frequency is scheduled to begin May 1. All of Spirit's flights will feature the Airbus A319 aircraft, capable of carrying 144 passengers. The airline has already shown its commitment to low fares with this service by running introductory one-way fares of $18.36 and $33 during their announcement press conference and recently unveiling a $9 fare during the ribbon cutting ceremony. Spirit flies to more than 40 destinations across the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean, with an average fare of just $100. In addition to Spirit, the anticipation of another low-fare carrier - AirTran Airways is building. The company recently announced that beginning on June 11, the airline will offer passengers four daily flights between the "Alamo City" and Atlanta, Georgia. The announcements from Spirit
Airlines and AirTran Airways means that San Antonio
International Airport has reached all-time highs in the number of
total passengers handled, the number of destinations available, via
nonstop flights, and the number of airlines operating. |
